I am personally very familiar with the challenge of finding suitable cycling apparel for women that isn’t bright neon pink, or of a very poor quality.

As an example, I spent many years cycling to work with a generic rucksack (and a sweaty back!) as I wasn’t aware of any alternatives. I finally bought some cheap pannier bags for a bikepacking trip but these were better suited to carrying camping equipment, not my laptop

I use a second hand pannier bag for work but this is similarly far from ideal as when I delve into it I’m never quite sure whether I am going to find my packed lunch or my puncture repair kit…

So when the opportunity came up to try out Vaela’s bike bag, I was very keen. Vaela was established in 2020 to address the lack of practical, stylish and sustainable cycling clothes and products for women who cycle. After a positive experience testing and reviewing with their cycling jeans and stylish cotton jacket, I felt confident that their bag would be another invaluable addition to my cycling gear.

Summary

A versatile cycling bag that works as both a backpack and a pannier bag. The exterior looks and feels great with it’s premium finish, while there are plenty of secure storage sections, including a built-in laptop sleeve.

Pros

  • Durable but soft finish
  • Lovely style
  • Very versatile
  • Reflective detailing

Cons

  • Very expensive
  • Straps can be fiddly when wearing winter coat

First Impressions

As with the arrival of the jeans, the bag came in well presented and sustainable packaging. Once again, a card featuring information about ‘The Godmother’ that is Lady Harberton was also included in keeping with Vaela’s focus on amplifying women’s cycling.

In terms of the bag, I was immediately taken aback by the high quality and finish. It felt durable, but soft. The reflective straps in the side pockets are a welcome, but subtle addition.

The latch on the front is easy and quick to use, and the two clips mean either can be used depending on how full the bag is.

On the back is a well padded flap to cover the system that attaches the bag to your bike, as well as a sturdy handle at the top.

Inside there is a large compartment that is divided into a section to store a laptop or tablet, as well as another smaller zipped pocket with the Vaela branding.

Key Features

  • Showerproof and durable dry-oiled organic cotton
  • Undyed organic cotton lining
  • Two generous 18cm front pockets, each easily holding an average reusable water bottle
  • Reflective tapes stitched into each front pocket that can be pulled out in the dark
  • The main bag is closed with solid zip
  • A 20cm zipped interior pocket easily fits a phone, keys and wallet
  • Internal laptop sleeve fits a 15″ laptop
  • Adjustable webbing straps serve as both the tote’s handle and the rucksack’s shoulder straps
  • Adjustable pannier clips fit virtually all pannier racks
  • Cotton webbing grab handle
  • Wool padding in the base, back, laptop sleeve, and pannier clip cover to protect you and your belongings
  • The padded flap with magnetic snap ensures the pannier clips aren’t felt when used as a tote or rucksack
  • Durable, premium stainless steel hardware from Italy, including ladder locks from Alce, snaps from AMF and zips from Lampo
  • Subtle Vaela branding embroidered in ‘tone on tone’ black thread

Testing

I was eager to use the bag for work and it easily accommodated everything I needed for the day. I was particularly grateful for the smaller internal zipped pocket to store my keys and work pass for quick, but secure access.

After adjusting the clips, it popped onto my pannier rack with a reassuring hold and the padded flap that covers the clips sat nicely in place on the top. I must admit that I wasn’t already familiar with how to use the locking mechanism to keep the bag fully secure but the lovely Jo from Vaela mentioned that they are in the process of making postcards to explain all the features so perhaps this could be mentioned.

The commute went smoothly, and the bag was as easy to get off as it was to get on. Once removed from my bike, I must admit that it did take me a while to get used to the straps cleverly being one continuous system as they are also used for the front latch system.

As I’ve been wearing my winter coat when using the bag, I had to make the straps as big as they could go so I could wear the bag in my preferred backpack set up. However, this means that unless I shorten them each time, they do stick out a bit when the bag is attached to my bike. It also leaves the latch hanging loose at the top when wearing the bag, but as shown below when wearing thinner layers it is possible to resolve this as you’ve got extra strap length to use.

Once at work, I was impressed that everything was still intact inside, including my precious packed lunch, and also that the bag wasn’t too dirty given how muddy and wet all my test rides have been.

Verdict

Vaela’s bike bag is without doubt a significant upgrade on and replacement for my previous pannier situation. The design and features have clearly been well thought through with urban cycling and women in mind.

It will set you back £240 but it is important to understand and acknowledge that the materials are of the highest quality and lowest environmental impact which cannot be underestimated.

Overall, I feel that Vaela’s bike bag is a reliable, practical and stylish product that is perfect for cycling from A to B and then going about your day with your laptop, lunch and more.

Transporting a laptop is one of the biggest challenges for commuting cyclists. Keeping your laptop dry, secure and protected from bumps and scrapes isn’t easy. Worse still, a laptop is probably the most expensive item that you’ll carry, so the stakes are high.

Weight is another issue. Not everybody owns or even wants one of the thinner, streamlined laptops and if you already have a lot of office supplies to carry adding a bulky computer can be the final straw. It’s enough to make some people abandon the idea of cycling to work altogether. Fortunately, there are nowadays more options than ever for safely and comfortably transporting your laptop.

Join us as we break down the options.

How Can I Carry My Laptop on a Bike?

A secure laptop bike bag is your best option for transporting your laptop to and from work. Long gone are the days when cyclists were forced to put up with standard rucksacks: you can now find plenty of bags designed specifically to hold laptops securely and comfortably.

With so many choices, it’s important to consider a few things before you buy a bag. Water and weatherproofing is the most important aspect. Look for material that’s fully waterproof to protect your tech – the last thing you want is moisture getting in.

Lightweight bags cut down on excessive weight but be sure that there’s ample padding to protect against bumps. Many bags also come with reflective detailing to keep you safe at night, and during the darker winter months.

Types of Bicycle Laptop Bags

Let’s break down the most popular types of laptop bags available.

Cycling Laptop Backpacks

Cycling laptop backpacks are the closest to a traditional rucksack. They’re worn on the back and are extremely spacious. They come in all shapes, sizes and prices, ranging from budget options to much more expensive offerings. The material also differs, so look for something fully waterproof.

The big advantage of backpacks is space. As well as a vast main compartment for your laptop (and plenty of other items like stationary, papers and a lunch box) you’ll get a range of smaller internal compartments and exterior pockets. The latter is useful for storing water bottles and snacks on the road. Many backpacks also come with reflective detailing and some are extremely stylish.

The main downside of all this space is bulkiness. Backpacks can be heavy and some cyclists don’t like wearing something so weighty on their backs. Despite all the pockets, arranging your items can also be more difficult and it isn’t as easy to dip in and out of a backpack as it is with a messenger bag.

  1. Rapha Reflective Travel Backpack

  2. Chrome Barrage Night Cargo Backpack

  3. Mission Workshop Rhake Laptop Backpack

Laptop Messenger Bags

A slim-lined and substantially lighter alternative to the classic backpack, messenger bags are worn to the side. They offer a snugger fit for your laptop so it won’t move around as much and their lightweight feel makes them an excellent choice for longer commutes.

Whether you prefer the weight of your laptop on your back or at the side is ultimately a matter of taste, although some cyclists feel that messenger bags affect balance. Still, they have a much more professional look than a rucksack and hold your laptop in a single, internal pocket. Some have smaller exterior pockets but their slimmed-down design usually means less storage than a rucksack.

Messenger bags are generally more stylish than their ruggedly-designed, rucksack counterparts and they transition easily from road to office. They can also be carried by hand as well as slung over the shoulder (most feature carry handles) but beware: since messenger bags offer a snugger fit, be sure to get a size that matches your laptop exactly!

  1. Chrome Industries Citizen Night Messenger Bag

  2. Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

  3. Mission Workshop Monty Messenger Bag

Laptop Pannier Bags

Pannier bags mount on the sides of a bike, at the front or the back. Their main benefit is that they shift the weight from you and onto the bike – you won’t have to carry your laptop on your back or slung across a shoulder. That makes for a more comfortable journey.

These bags are useful for commuters who find that carrying a rucksack makes them sweat or that the additional weight of a messenger bag affects their balance. Most panniers are fully waterproof and are easy to attach and detach. They’re fantastic if you have a long commute to work and really take the strain off your body.

Downsides include weight imbalances and cost (panniers tend to be one of the more expensive options, especially if you want a really high-quality one). Volume can also be a problem. Panniers generally aren’t as spacious as rucksacks so you won’t be able to store as many other items with your laptop.

Laptop frame and handlebar bags are also available, but these are somewhat harder to find and can be more difficult to fit on your bike.

  2. Goodordering Laptop Backpack Pannier Bag

  3. Ortlieb Twin-City Pannier Messenger Bag

Yes, it’s the most expensive backpack on the list but this is a top of the range bag that more than justifies the cost. Featuring a padded laptop compartment, iPad sleeve, two exterior pockets and a mesh compartment, you certainly won’t be short of space: this bag feels much bigger than its 22 litre volume. It is (of course) fully waterproof and features exterior straps for coats etc.

Pros

  • Top of the range
  • Loads of spaces
  • Lots of compartments

Cons

  • Extremely expensive
  • Limited colour options
  • No reflective strips

Best Laptop Messenger Bags

Messenger bags offer a much snugger fit for laptops, so be sure to double check the size and ensure that your computer will fit. Elsewhere, look for secure seals around the top of the bag, waterproof material and a few internal pockets to make item sorting easier.

1. Chrome Industries Citizen Night Messenger Bag

  • UK Flag £190
  • US Flag $230
  • EU Flag €230

Prices are approximate

  • Volume: 24 L
  • Size: 33 x 55 x 18 cm
  • Fits Laptops Upto: 15″

Big internal volume

Lots of reflective detailing

Fits most laptops

One of the complaints sometimes levelled at messenger bags is their limited storage – not so here! The Citizen boasts an impressive 24 litre capacity, which makes it bigger than some backpacks. There are plenty of pockets and compartments too, and a quick-release buckle makes it super easy to access your items. Reflective strips are top notch and the laptop sleeve is fully padded.

Pros

  • Spacious interior
  • Extra safe at night
  • Great internal sorting

Cons

  • Somewhat bulky
  • Drab design
  • No carry handle

2. Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

  • UK Flag £80
  • US Flag $90

Good internal organisation

One of the more budget friendly options on the list, the Timbuk2 doesn’t compromise on quality where it matters. The waterproof coating is fully weatherproof and can be wiped clean, making maintenance a simple business. The buckle is quick adjust and easy to alter on the move, while the multiple internal pockets are cleverly arranged to distribute weight. The result is a comfortable, secure and stylish bag.

Pros

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Weight stabilisation
  • Excellent waterproofing

Cons

  • Not the biggest
  • Only fits laptops up to 13″
  • No reflective detailing

3. Mission Workshop Monty Messenger Bag

  • Volume: 21 L
  • Size: 40 x 25 x 12.5 cm
  • Fits Laptops Upto: 15″

Generous volume

Cross-chest stabiliser

Waterproof mesh

Customisation is key here. Depending on weather conditions you can use the bag as a roll top or traditional fold down – there’s even an optional cross-chest stabiliser that smoothens out ride quality and helps with balance. Two laptop compartments (one for a 13 inch laptop, the other for up to 15 inches) give you plenty of space and there’s also a zippered pocket on the front.

Pros

  • Two laptop compartments
  • Two waterproof layers
  • Stable ride

Cons

  • No reflective details
  • Quite expensive
  • No easy access external pockets

Best Laptop Pannier Bags

Pannier bags free you from the yolk of carrying a laptop on your back/over your shoulder and they’re generally favoured for longer commutes. Look for well-made panniers with secure attachments, good waterproofing (to repel splash back from the road) and stabilisation technology.

1. Ortlieb Pannier Office-Bag High-Visibility

  • UK Flag £170
  • US Flag $200
  • EU Flag €200

Prices are approximate

  • Volume: 21 L
  • Size: 40 x 30 x 17 cm
  • Fits Laptops Upto: 15″

Quick lock mounting

Ortlieb specialises in road safety and their highly reflective pannier is no exception. The whole bag lights up, guaranteeing that you won’t be missed in even the worst weather conditions. Elsewhere, you’ll also find excellent waterproofing credentials, quick lock mounting and a carry handle that transforms the pannier into more of a briefcase. It’s not the most spectacular bag on the list but it’s rugged and up to any ride.

Pros

  • Safe in low light
  • Lots of compartments
  • Fully waterproof

Cons

  • Not the biggest
  • Only available in one colour
  • Fairly basic

2. Goodordering Laptop Backpack Pannier Bag

  • UK Flag £80
  • US Flag $90
  • EU Flag €90

Prices are approximate

  • Volume: 28.8 L
  • Size: 36 x 32 x 14 cm
  • Fits Laptops Upto: 15″

Budget price

Fun and quirky design

Doubles as backpack

The two most notable aspects of this bag are that it’s absolutely massive and comparatively cheap against the other offerings here. Admittedly, that huge 28.8 litre volume shrinks to a more modest 19.5 when rolled up, but the bag is extremely versatile. It can be a pannier, a roll top or simple buckle fastening backpack. For the particularly intrepid, it’s also engineered to fit inside a plane as hand luggage.

Pros

  • Well priced
  • Secure roll-top
  • Versatile

Cons

  • Quite large (so bulky)
  • Not the lightest
  • Design won’t appeal to everyone

3. Ortlieb Twin-City Pannier Messenger Bag

  • UK Flag £80
  • US Flag $90
  • EU Flag €90

Prices are approximate

  • Volume: 9 L
  • Size: 39 x 30 x 12 cm
  • Fits Laptops Upto: 13″

Lightweight, compact and stylish

Dual purpose shoulder bag

Value for money

The Twin-City fits a lot into its compact package. It’s dual purpose and can be used as a messenger bag with a few simple readjustments. The QL2.1 mounting system means quick and easy mounting and the shoulder strap is nicely padded for when you want to carry the bag. There’s reflective detailing all around and the fabric is waterproof (apart from on the exterior pocket).

Pros

  • Budget price
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Works as a shoulder bag

Cons

  • Quite small
  • Outside pocket not waterproof
  • No roll top

Pannier. Pan-ey-er. Pan-e-yeh. However you pronounce it, the humble pannier bag has been helping cyclists carry their belongings for nigh on a century.

Commonplace in cycle touring, now more commonly referred to as bikepacking, panniers are also popular amongst urban cyclists. Often, bike commuters who need to carry a laptop, another set of clothes and their lunch – choose a pannier bag as their carry option.

Pannier bags are attached to a bike via a pannier rack, an extra component secured over the front or rear bicycle wheel. For the uninitiated, this may seem like a complex system. OK, there are several compatibility issues for some bags and racks, but once understood, it is easy to find a pannier and rack combination that suits you and your bike. These days, many bikes and electric bikes are sold with pannier racks fitted – choose a pannier bag, pack up and ride!

The inherent design of most pannier bags makes them easy to waterproof. Keeping the rain out on items dry inside is an absolute must for cyclists who need to ride – come what may.

In our guide to the best waterproof pannier bags, we’ll help you understand why panniers are a great option, whether to choose a front or rear pannier bag and lastly, list seven bags for you to load up on your next rainy ride to work.

Why Panniers Are Great

Amongst cyclists who ride to work, a debate rages over the best type of bag for commuters. A backpack (a crossbody messenger bag is another pannier alternative) is a straightforward and fuss-free way to take stuff from A to B on a bike. And yet, start riding a bike over longer distances, with weightier, more cumbersome gear or in inclement weather – and a backpack is beaten into second place by a waterproof pannier bag.

That begins to describe why panniers are a great option for carrying items whilst riding a bike. But let’s take a moment to look at their benefits in greater detail.

First up, comfort. All the best bike pannier bags make riding a bike with many items more comfortable. Although fine for short journeys by bike a fully-loaded, hefty backpack swinging from your shoulders is both a physical and mental hindrance when pushing the pedals. Having the bag on your back quickly builds up an uncomfortable sweat, even during the winter.

Let your bike do the work. Load items into a pannier bag to take the weight off your shoulders and let your back breathe. There are other benefits too. Keeping the weight of items closer to the ground than a backpack also helps your centre of gravity when riding.

That said, the pendulum effect of a rear pannier bag can take a little bit of getting used to when you first start riding – especially when starting and stopping. After a few test rides around the block and a week of your daily commute, any worries will quickly dispel.

The second benefit of pannier bags is their capacity. The majority of cycling backpacks range between 18-25L – with the average pannier bag sold in a pair and delivering around 20L capacity each, it’s easy to see how more items can be carried in a pannier bag. They’re more adaptable than a backpack too. Don’t need two panniers worth of gear for your bike ride? Just unclip one pannier bag, load the other and off you ride.

A third benefit of a pannier bag – and one that forms the basis of this guide – is its ability to withstand consistent dowsing of rain. Although not all pannier bags are 100% waterproof, most have some element of water resistance.

Without straps and outer pockets of a cycling backpack, a pannier bag has a simple design and construction. The main body of the pannier is commonly made of PVC tarpaulin. A rolltop closure cinches belongings safely inside and away from rain, snow, wind, road spray or whatever you care to throw at them.

If you’re a fan of waterproof ratings (who isn’t?!) and want a completely waterproof pannier bag, search for one with an IP64 rating. In tests, a bag with this rating will be “protected from water spray from any direction”.

Front Pannier vs Rear Panniers

Slalom down your local cycle lane, and we’d be surprised if you didn’t spot someone riding a bike with a pannier bag attached to a rear pannier rack. Less likely is a cyclist travelling with a front pannier rack and a set of bags attached. So which is better? Which suits you?

In our experience, you should weigh up your capacity requirements, whether you ride with varying gear amounts and how manoeuvrable you’d like to be when loaded up. Let’s look at those in turn.

First, front panniers are smaller in capacity than rear panniers – typically 50-70% of the size of a rear pannier bag. On average this equates to around 12 litres of space per pannier bag. If you plan to ride a bike carrying bulky items like shoes, boxes, a laptop computer or items that generally don’t pack down well, a front pannier bag will quickly fill up. Choose a set of rear pannier bags instead.

The second consideration when choosing whether to run a set of front or rear pannier bags is adaptability. The consensus is that whilst it’s possible (and comfortable) to ride with just one rear pannier bag – riding with one front pannier bag isn’t recommended. A lopsided load is fine on the rear, but loading up just one front pannier bag will quickly affect how your bike handles and steers.

Front pannier bags are popular with touring cyclists who ride long distances, in quiet settings, at a leisurely pace. In busy towns and cities, riding a bike is a different kettle of fish. Stops and starts are frequent. Turns and corners are a regular occurrence.

Other road users, other cyclists, and pedestrians, all require negotiating. Thus, manoeuvrability when riding a bike with pannier bags is key. This is the third and final consideration when choosing whether to buy a set of front or rear pannier bags.

Front pannier bags are mounted lower to the ground than rear pannier bags. Although this goes some way to aid the steering of the bike when loaded, turning the handlebars is still more of an effort than usual. When zipping in and out of traffic, arcing around corners and giving way at T-junctions, a set of front pannier bags might quickly become tiresome. Wheeling the bike is also tricky. Going up and down stairs with a pair of front pannier bags on your bike even more so.

Best Ortlieb Pannier Bags

As we alluded to earlier, Ortlieb is the leader in ‘on-bike’ bicycle bags. Although there are already two Ortlieb products on our list of the best waterproof pannier bags, it’s worth mentioning a few more.

First up, it’s a couple of variants of the erstwhile back roller. The Back-Roller Urban is a more muted version of the standard Back Roller. The textured fabric is still waterproof but it’s arguably less garish than most panniers. For more awareness when cycling in lowlight choose the Back Roller High Viz.

For something to add to a front pannier rack, plump for Ortlieb’s Sport Roller pannier bags. The 12.5L capacity is the perfect size for loading up front and because it’s from Ortlieb you know it’s waterproof and sold with a 5-year warranty.

Simple range of three colours

Swede’s Thule is more commonly known as a brand that designs and manufactures touring equipment for vehicles with 4 wheels rather than two. But look closer at their website or in your local bike shop and you’ll spot a range of bicycle bags hiding in plain sight.

The Shield pannier bags are available in this 13L size and a larger 17L size. They’re IPX4-rated and have a few organisers inside to keep gear sorted.

Rounding off our list of the best waterproof pannier bags is a set from Vaude, another powerhouse in the world of bicycle bags.

Made in Germany with climate-neutral manufacturing the bags feature a genuine extra pocket at the front, a neat place to keep a pair of gloves, set of keys or office pass handy.

There are shoulder straps on each bag and the attachment system doubles as a grab handle.

Are Bike Messenger Bags Good for Commuting?

Messenger bags are all but essential for the daily commute. Not only do they help you to carry all your supplies to work, but they also keep everything dry and ordered. The best messenger bags will be waterproof, weatherproof and lightweight.

They’ll also come with a range of other features to make your life easier, all without breaking the bank. Finding the right messenger bag makes the commute (and therefore your morning routine) much easier. With so much choice it can be difficult to know where to start, though, so we’ve done the research for you.

Bike Messenger Bags [PROS + CONS]

PROSCONS
“Smart” and suitable for the officeCan be uncomfortable on one shoulder
Good for organising itemsNot as durable as backpacks
Easy accessCan interfere with range of movement

Messenger Bag vs Backpack for Bike Commuting

The messenger bag vs backpack debate has been raging for as long as cyclists have been commuting! Everybody has their preference, but as a general rule messenger bags are better for the commute because they feature more organised internal compartments. They’re also much easier to pack/unpack.

Some people find that backpacks are more comfortable because they place weight squarely on your back rather than all on one side. This ultimately comes down to a matter of personal preference, though. Messenger bags are also more accessible as you ride along, perhaps to grab a drink while you’re stopped at traffic lights.

They also fit the commuter “aesthetic” better and simply look more professional than backpacks. Although backpacks are sometimes considered more robust, that really comes down to the product. A well chosen messenger bag can be just as tough as any backpack.

Bike Messenger Bags: Key Features

There are lots of features to look out for when choosing a messenger bag. Space is obviously important, but it’s not as simple as choosing a large bag. The best messenger bags maximise space via some kind of internal sorting system (pockets and zips, for example) to keep your items in good order.

Water and weatherproofing are absolutely vital. There’s nothing worse than arriving at work to find that all your papers and possessions have been soaked through – even worse if you’re carrying electronics like a laptop computer or tablet. Messenger bags shouldn’t just be made from waterproof material, they should be totally watertight with secure fastenings.

Comfort is another key concern. This means a well padded strap that doesn’t cut into your body as you cycle but remains secure. Bags shouldn’t be cumbersome, flap about or chaff, and nor should they be excessively heavy. The best messenger bags are super lightweight but still retain their shape.

Finally, look at the price. Luxury brands are great, but you can often get all the same (if not better) features for a fraction of the cost.

Best Bike Messenger Bags [Top 7]

1. Chrome Industries Citizen Night Messenger Bag

  • UK Flag £189
  • US Flag $205
  • EU Flag €205

Prices are approximate

Waterproof Rating: Resistant
Size: 33 x 55 x 18cm
Volume: 24 L

High visibility detailing

Multiple internal pockets

 Lifetime guarantee

The 24 litre Citizen Night bag has attained something of an iconic status amongst cyclists over the years. Its modern aesthetic, streamlined design and cool range of features make it easily one of the most popular messenger bags in the world. Safety should always be the top priority and this bag has you covered. It features a range of reflective strips and embellishments that light up after dark but remain low-key during the day.

Waterproofing is also top of the range. The outer nylon shell is coated with slick DWR and there’s even a tarp liner for additional protection. An industrial strength hook and loop accessory means that the bag stays secure across your shoulder (yet loose enough to change shoulders if necessary). It’s pleasingly easy to access, too. The buckle is quick release for dipping in and out and you even get an integrated bottle opener.

24 litres is a lot of space, and this bag can easily hold a 17 inch laptop. The interior is nicely arranged with multiple pockets for item sorting. You should have no trouble keeping things like phones, pens and tablets organised. There’s even room for a pair of shoes in the spacious rear pocket.

2. Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

  • UK Flag £80
  • US Flag $89
  • EU Flag €89

Prices are approximate

Waterproof Rating: Resistant
Size: 27.5 x 33.5 x 13cm
Volume:
 14 L

Lightweight

Recycled materials

11 colour options

If you’re after a more classic, retro messenger bag, then look no further than the Timbuk2. We think it might be the most stylish bag on the list and its unique patterning stands out from the crowd. It comes in 11 different colour combinations, each one of them a throwback to days gone by. Timbuk2 has built on 30 years of experience with this product and it really shows.

It’s crafted from 100% recycled polyester for the environmentally conscious and weighs just 1.7lb. That lightweight feel does come at the expense of internal space, which is limited to just 14 litres (quite small compared to some of the other offerings here). The bag makes the most of that space with a series of internal pockets, however, so you’ll be able to keep everything nicely organised.

The exterior is water resistant against light rain and the slick material makes it extremely easy to clean. The shoulder strap is adjustable to suit your riding style, there’s an external pocket for a water bottle and a loop for attaching lights.

3. Mission Workshop Monty Messenger Bag

  • UK Flag £220
  • US Flag $200
  • EU Flag €200

Prices are approximate

Waterproof Rating: Waterpoof
Size: 25 x 40 x 13cm
Volume:
 21 L

Roll top fastening

Waterpoof YKK zippers

Two big laptop sleeves

The Monty is the bag to go for if you’re after extra protection. It features a roll top to keep your possessions dry in even the worst weather (although this can also be used as a traditional fold-down, depending on the occasion). Milspec webbing and secure, YKK zippers further bolster the all weather defences.

It’s spacious, too. The 21 litre capacity is divided into a series of organised pockets. These include two big sleeves (13 and 15 inches) for laptop storage, an internal zipper pocket and 2 quick access cargo pockets. Bags really don’t come much more organised than this. As a result, the storage feels even more generous than the 21 litre capacity suggests.

Elsewhere, the bag is crafted from durable 1000d nylon and comes with aluminium hardware. The cross chest stabiliser can be detached. It’s by no means the cheapest bag here, but if you’re willing to pay for a high level of protection, great organisation and quality materials, then look no further.

4. Chrome Industries Mini Metro Messenger Bag

  • UK Flag £147
  • US Flag $160
  • EU Flag €160

Prices are approximate

Waterproof Rating: Resistant
Size: 30 x 50 x 7cm
Volume:
 20.5 L

Liner dividing wet/dry items

Quick release buckle

Fold top

Despite its name, the Mini Metro isn’t quite as small as you might imagine. With a 20.5 litre capacity, you won’t be short of space and it can hold laptop computers up to 23 inches. It also features a floating bucket liner to divide wet items from dry – perfect if you need to store a coat or shoes after a cycle through the rain.

The fastening is quick release (with an attached bottle opener) and the compression straps are reflective for nighttime/low light cycling. That makes a real difference in the winter months and helps to keep you safe. Shoulder straps are padded and comfortable with a stabilising strap to assist with balance and security.

A tarp liner and nylon shell take care of waterproofing and the bag closes with a big, fold-over flap to keep moisture at bay. It has a more “rustic” and “outdoorsy” look, making it perfect for weekend adventures as well as weekday commutes.

5. Ortlieb Twin City Urban

  • UK Flag £135
  • US Flag $115
  • EU Flag €115

Prices are approximate

Waterproof Rating: Resistant
Size: 30 x 39 x 12cm
Volume:
 9 L

Two bags in one

Outside pocket

The Urban lives up to its name with a neat, contemporary design. It has a trim, tailored look, perfect for cyclists with a firm eye on style. As such, it’s made with two purposes in mind: a cycling messenger bag and a more general, all-purpose shoulder bag. Depending on which way you close the flap, the bag can be mounted on your shoulder or strapped to your bike rack.

That dual nature does make it one of the smaller bags on the list, however, at just 9 litres. Still, you’ll be able to store a laptop, tablet and a range of smaller items like phones and chargers in the internal compartments. As all good messenger bags should be, it’s weather and water proof but softer than most. The fabric has a pleasant, luxurious feel.

There’s also a zipped pocket on the outside and the shoulder strap is made of soft cotton. It’s worth noting that the outside pocket isn’t waterproof, so avoid storing any electronics in there!

6. UrbanTourist Kulie

  • UK Flag £110
  • US Flag $90
  • EU Flag €90

Prices are approximate

Waterproof Rating: Resistant
Size: 35 x 43 x 8cm
Volume:
 5 L

Dirt cover included

Attaches to bike

Zippered outer sleeve

A messenger bag with a difference, the Kulie isn’t carried over the shoulder like a traditional messenger. Instead, it attaches to your bike via a special clip. That makes it the ideal bag for anyone who doesn’t like the weight of a messenger on their shoulder, or feels that carrying a bag affects ride quality.

Once detached, of course, it slips easily over the shoulder like any other messenger bag. Features include a velcro outer fastening for quick access and a zippered outer sleeve to hold essentials like your phone. The side and bottoms are harder than other bags so this is a fantastic choice if you’re transporting valuables.

Inner webbing keeps smaller items like chargers and pens in place. The bag is water resistant but comes with an extra layer of protection too. You have the option of fitting a dirt cover, which puts an additional barrier between the bag and the elements.

7. Sweetbriar Classic

  • UK Flag £60
  • US Flag $40
  • EU Flag €40

Prices are approximate

Waterproof Rating: Resistant
Size: 27 x 35 x 2cm
Volume:
 15 L approx

Budget option

Quality materials

Spacious interior

The Sweetbriar is the perfect no-frills, affordable messenger bag. It’s a quality product without an accompanying large price tag and it comes in seven different colours. The design is, as you would expect, simple, but this bag uses premium materials. A heavyweight 100% cotton canvas comes with metal accents and the front flap is velcro for easy access.

Inside you’ll find a spacious compartment with two pockets. There are also some side pockets for smaller items (perhaps a water bottle) and the shoulder strap is nicely padded. Despite these pockets the bag only weighs in at 1.2lbs, ensuring that it fits the “lightweight” category.

The only concession that the Sweetbriar makes is in terms of padding. There isn’t much (so the bag doesn’t hold its shape as well as others) and you might be advised to keep your laptop in a sleeve. Otherwise, this is the perfect budget option and it even comes with a 1 year warranty.

Folding bikes are fantastic. They’re convenient, save on space and are brilliant if you commute to work and bicycle storage is an issue. A folding bike requires a bag to realise its full potential, though. Being able to carry your bike on busses, trains and even planes opens up a whole new world of possibilities.

Here’s a rundown of the best folding bike bags on the market today.

Folding Bike Carry Bag (Top 5)

  1. Premium folding bike bag

    The Brompton Travel Bag

Lightweight, versatile bag with four wheels, reinforced sides, and multiple carrying options for bike travel.

  2. Budget-friendly folding bike bag

Sturdy, waterproof bag with padding, ample space, and easy attachment to a pannier rack.

  3. Versatile, high-protection bike bag

    Rockbros Bike Transport Bag

Two-in-one bag with shockproof features, adjustable straps, foldable design, and lockable for secure travel.

  4. Spacious, compact folding bike bag

  5. Durable, lightweight bike bag

    Selighting Folding Bike Bag

Made with high-density webbing, lightweight polyester, accessible storage pouch, and suitable for shorter journeys.

Best Ways to Carry a Folding Bike

There are lots of different ways to carry a folding bike. Some people choose to attach their folded bike to a backpack, others opt for a hard shell case. Both of these have their drawbacks (the backpack option exposes bikes to the elements and cases are heavy) so a bike bag makes a great alternative.

Folding bikes are all about convenience without sacrificing performance. Your carrying solution shouldn’t compromise this.

Most bike bags are fully waterproof, lightweight and provide a comfortable way to carry your bike at the end of a journey. They’re useful for commutes and can be lifesavers if there isn’t much storage where you work. They’re even better for long-distance travellers and mean that you can take your bike literally anywhere in the world.

Best Folding Bike Bags [Top 5]

Given how useful they are, folding bike bags are in high demand. This, in turn, means that the market is crowded with a lot of choices!

Here’s a breakdown of our top five picks.

1. The Brompton Travel Bag

  • UK Flag £165
  • US Flag $231
  • EU Flag €194

Prices are approximate

Extra manoeuvrability

Multiple carry options

Reinforced sides

Given their specialisation with folding bikes, it should come as no surprise that Brompton lead the way with their premium bag. It isn’t the cheapest on the list, but for the price you get quality materials, four wheels and some excellent features including a tilted base for enhanced manoeuvrability and multiple carrying options.

This is the bag to choose if you plan to take your bike on a long journey. Those four wheels make navigating a crowded airport or train station a breeze, and the specially engineered base ensures agile movement. The sides are reinforced with plastic panels (perfect for protecting your bike in a plane hold or a luggage rack) and tension straps secure the bike inside – it won’t move around.

Price is the biggest drawback here, but if you’re willing to pay a little extra for top of the range security and manoeuvrability you need look no further. With a weight of just 3.2kg, it’s surprisingly light and you can choose to carry it using a shoulder strap or one of several side handles. There’s even an extra pocket for storing smaller items. This is a bag that gives you freedom to roam, albeit with a (quite steep) price tag.

Pros

  • High quality, premium bag
  • Four wheels
  • Excellent for long distance travel

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Pairs best with Brompton bikes
  • Only one colour

2. Halfords Folding Bike Bag

  • UK Flag £20
  • US Flag $28
  • EU Flag €23

Prices are approximate

 Low price

Water, oil and weather poof

140 litre capacity

If you baulk at the price of the Brompton (or are just looking for a budget option to carry your bike around in the daytime) then you can’t go far wrong with the Halfords Folding Bike Bag. Halfords know their bikes and this no frills offering doesn’t disappoint.

It’s by no means bursting with features and innovation, but for the price you get an exceptionally sturdy bag that’s fully water and weather proof. Better still, it comes with padding around the shoulder and also the hip (an area that too many bags neglect). With a generous 140 litre capacity, it will store bikes up to 20 inches, so you won’t be stuck for space. If you own a smaller, lightweight bike and don’t want to add much bulk with a bag, this is a fantastic option.

This bag folds small and can easily be attached to a rear pannier rack. It’s oil resistant too, so you won’t have to worry about getting your clothes dirty as you carry your bike. That’s really where the features end, but this is a bag that puts economy and functionality at the forefront of its agenda. There aren’t any frills or designer tweaks, but if you just want a bag that works (and you don’t want to break the bank paying for it) this is the place to look.

Pros

  • Budget friendly
  • Will keep your bike protected
  • Big capacity

Cons

  • No frills
  • No additional pockets
  • No wheels

3. Rockbros Bike Transport Bag

  • UK Flag £65
  • US Flag $90
  • EU Flag €77

Prices are approximate

Two bags in one

Shock proof

Anti-foul interior

Holding an impressive 4/5 star average in Amazon reviews (from 85 ratings) the Rockbros manages to strike a compromise between cost, functionality and features. It’s a mid range offering that doesn’t skimp on premium additions like the 3mm thickened sponge interlayer designed to protect against bumps, jolts and shocks.

Although it’s sold as a one piece, the Rockbros actually consists of two bags: the carry bag and a backpack. The former is heavily protected with a shockproof bottom and shock absorbing tape. If you’re looking for a heavy duty, high protection case, then this might be for you. Fortunately, all of that protection doesn’t make it cumbersome or uncomfortable. The carry case has thickened handles and an adjustable shoulder strap.

When not in use the case folds down small enough to be attached to handlebars or simply carried in the backpack. You won’t have to worry about cleaning either, since the interior is lined with anti-fouling fabric. This means that you can simply wipe it down with a damp cloth.

The bag is lockable, and although it doesn’t come with wheels we think all that protection makes it ideal for use in an airport or on the train. Its sturdy design will see you safely through any journey.

Pros

  • Offers superior protection
  • Easy to clean
  • Two bags for the price of one

Cons

  • No wheels
  • Only holds bikes under 20 inches
  • Slightly heavy

4. Trancoss Bike Folding Travel Bag

  • UK Flag £29
  • US Flag $41
  • EU Flag €34

Prices are approximate

Biggest on the list

Padded carry straps

Internal pockets

If size is your motivating factor, look no further than the Trancoss. It will store bikes up to a massive 29 inches while leaving room for other gear and accessories. That makes it ideal for longer journeys, although a bag this big might be a little cumbersome for day to day travel. As you would expect from a quality product, the fabric is fully waterproof and highly durable.

The interior is padded (though not to the same extent as the Rockbros) and should keep your bike secure against all but the roughest treatment. There’s padding on the shoulder strap too, which is surprisingly comfortable given the size of the bag. Obviously, a bag this large will always be slightly unwieldy, but Trancoss has done a fantastic job at making those straps as comfortable as possible.

Best of all, this bag folds into an exceptionally compact package when empty. It’s light too, so you won’t have to worry about cycling with it attached to your bike. The Trancoss is surprisingly cheap. It falls in the mid-range price bracket without too many noticeable sacrifices. It doesn’t have the luxury feel of the Brompton or the extreme protection of the Rockbros, but for bigger bikes it’s a must.

Pros

  • Big and spacious
  • Comfortable carry straps
  • Room for accesories

Cons

  • Unwieldy to carry
  • Only light padding inside
  • Only one carry option (shoulder straps)

5. Selighting Folding Bike Bag

  • UK Flag £25
  • US Flag $35
  • EU Flag €30

Prices are approximate

High density webbing

Additional storage pouch

Waterproof

It’s certainly not the largest, but the Selighting bag might just be the most durable on the list. Owing to its special, high density webbing, this bag can carry even the heaviest of bikes and will hold its shape for years. As long term investments go it’s a trustworthy option – and it’s even at the lower end of the price range!

The bulk of the bag is made from 600D polyester, making it exceptionally lightweight. A storage pouch makes it easy to pack accessories and other gear. Clever design keeps that pouch accessible even when the bag is folded down, so you can attach it to your handlebars and still grab what you need.

Of course, the bag is also waterproof and it’s designed with public transport (trains, busses) and shorter journeys in mind. It might not have the additional protection required for a long haul bag, but it will certainly see you through shorter journeys without any problems.

Ultimately, this bag is all about that special webbing. If you’ve invested in a few foldable bike bags over the years only for them to wear out or lose shape, we recommend giving the Selighting a try. Over all, it’s a fantastic choice for lighter, smaller bikes.

Pros

  • Will last for a long time
  • Lightweight
  • Storage pouch

Cons

  • The smallest on the list
  • Designed for shorter journeys
  • Only one shoulder strap

Folding Bicycle Bag FAQ

Can a Folding Bike Fit in a Backpack?

Not normally. Although there are some folding bikes small enough to fit inside a backpack (and backpacks big enough to house them) the usual way to pair the two is by strapping the bike to the outside of the pack.

Can You Put a Folding Bike in a Suitcase?

Although possible (with a big case!) putting a folding biking into a suitcase isn’t recommended. The bike will move around, exposing it to damage, and the combined weight of the two will be extremely heavy.

Craft Cadence’s 2022 IPXS waterproof roll top promises a backpack that’s both lightweight and packed with storage, stylish yet functional. Craft Cadence has long been a leader in the commuter backpack field, but how does this latest offering shape up?

First impressions

The backpack impresses with its high quality materials and finish.

My first thoughts upon unboxing the Craft Cadence were that this is a serious piece of kit. I was struck by the robust material (the backpack promises to be fully waterproof) and the build quality. It has the feel of a premium offering that could carry a much bigger price tag.

Craft Cadence describes the aesthetic as “minimalist but functional.” This might not be the most overtly stylish backpack on the market but it grabbed my attention through build quality alone.

Summary

The Craft Cadence Rolltop Backpack is a stylish and functional cycling backpack with a roll-top closure, waterproof fabric, and reflective accents for visibility. It also features multiple compartments, a padded laptop sleeve, and a built-in helmet holder.

Pros

  • Sturdy
  • Waterproof
  • Comfortable to wear

Cons

  • Bit pricey
  • No built in water bottle holder

Key Features

  • Roll top
  • Waterproof and extremely durable
  • 21 litre capacity
  • Detachable tech pouch
  • 8 internal pockets and 2 external
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable foam padding
  • Anti-sweat straps
  • High-vis detailing

First things first: this backpack holds a lot. It’s not the biggest on the market with just a 21 litre capacity, but it feels much larger than it is because it’s so organised. I was particularly impressed by the detachable tech sleeve. Secured to the interior by velcro straps, the pouch can be removed. This makes it much easier to arrange items without rooting around.

The detachable tech pouch makes it much easier to arrange your items.

The pouch features 8 compartments, one of which is zipped. I found myself using the zipped pouch to store my laptop, the attached sleeve to hold my tablet and one of the two smaller pouches to hold my phone. The spacious, rear pouch is useful for holding cables, chargers and power banks. Two pen/pencil holders are a nice addition (I’m prone to losing stationary) and there’s a clip for attaching keys.

It can be a little fiddly to detach the pouch (especially if you have a lot of other items loose in the bag) since the velcro tends to reattach, but this is nonetheless a fantastic way to store your accessories. It’s also worth noting that the zipped pocket isn’t quite large enough to zip closed while holding a 15 inch laptop but that’s hardly a deal-breaker. Being able to remove all your tech at once is a real time saver.

Even with all of those pockets filled, the bag feels nearly empty with a vast portion of space left for a change of clothes, a packed lunch, shoes and nearly anything else that you can think of. I was surprised to find myself neglecting the main compartment. With most of my items stored in the tech pouch, I tended to stash my coat, newspaper and a few snacks in the remaining space – not coming even close to filling the 21 litre capacity.

Two external pockets offer ample space for storing maintenance items like pumps and inner tubes. The front strap will keep a D-lock secure but there’s no dedicated, external water bottle holder which might be an annoyance for some. That said, you can find an external water bottle holder on Amazon for a very affordable price as a workaround.

The Road Test

Most importantly of all, how does it fare on the road?

True to its word, the Craft Cadence is fully waterproof. With its durable materials and high quality finish I never expected anything less, but water really does run off this backpack without collecting. That kept me dry and it’s a big change from other backpacks that, while technically waterproof, accumulate a lot of surface moisture as you ride.

It excels in the comfort department too. Most backpacks feature foam panelling of some kind, but the panels on the Cadence are chunky and generous. The positioning of the tech pouch is flush against the back of the bag, but the cushioning is so deep that I didn’t feel any burden. Even after filling the pack to capacity it remained extremely comfortable and felt (almost counterintuitively) light.

It’s rare to find padding as thick and generous as this.

Those pads are designed to prevent back sweat. I did feel heat build-up around the pads as I cycled but the ventilated straps are more effective. The roll top is streamlined and not too obtrusive when glancing back over your shoulder (a pet peeve of mine). I was also impressed with how well this bag holds its shape. No matter how you stuff it, it retains rigidity as you cycle, helping with balance and weight distribution. I got an extremely stable ride from this backpack, especially with the addition of waist straps (which can be removed).

The lack of an external water bottle pocket is a mild annoyance but won’t be too much of a concern on shorter commutes. You can use those two external pockets for a bottle (it will stick out) but otherwise, there are no “easy access” compartments on the outside. Last but not least I was pleased to discover that the Craft Cadence logo is reflective and that there are high visibility patches on the shoulder straps. Obviously, this isn’t the highest vis backpack that you’ll find, but these details do make a difference.

Two external zip pockets can be used for maintenance equipment
PROSCONS
Extremely organised storageNo external water bottle pocket
Comfortable and lightweightNot the most eye catching design
Very high build qualityDetaching tech pouch can be fiddly
Totally waterproof
Multi-functional

Conclusion

This is the backpack of choice for anybody who likes to keep their belongings ultra organised. Don’t be put off by the 21 litre capacity. I’m yet to actually fill the space. The tech pouch holds nearly all your essentials with plenty of room to spare in the pack proper. Waterproof materials, stability and a comfortable ride make this the ideal commuter backpack. More accessible external pockets (especially one for a water bottle) would have been welcome, and some will prefer bags with a little more visibility.

Although it’s designed as a commuter bag, I felt that the Craft Cadence could be multipurpose. I’m certainly considering making this bag my go-to choice for longer rides. It’s got more than enough room to store supplies (even light luggage) and the padding feels comfortable enough to make much longer journeys a breeze. Being able to detach the tech pouch makes the backpack extremely versatile. Take it out and you’ve suddenly got a travel backpack.

Bike Commuter Backpacks: Key Features

No two commutes are the same. A commuter backpack needs to have enough features to cover you in any eventuality. Comfort is extremely important (and it takes many forms). Good ventilation is essential and will keep you cool as you make your way through the traffic.

Padding on the back and shoulders will make carrying your workload a breeze. Look for more width on shoulder pads to distribute weight evenly across your back.

Durability is a big concern too. A waterproof backpack is almost essential and will keep your laptop, tablet and work documents dry. Zippers and roll tops are effective ways to keep water out. Look for robust, quality material too.

Rugged backpacks might cost more but they’ll last longer and protect valuable devices on the move. Inbuilt pockets and compartments make sorting and storing your items much easier.

The more visible you are the better, especially in the darker months. Many backpacks come with reflective stripes to keep you safe on the road. Others feature attached lights and some are even made from fully reflective materials.

Also consider the type of environment you work in. A smart office demands a more subtle, minimalist backpack. You might opt for something more laid back in a casual workplace.

The best thing about this backpack is that you’d have no idea that this was a “reflective backpack” during the day. It just looks like a really stylish commuter backpack. But shine a light on it and it bursts into life.

Aesthetically the finish includes a classy cast metal Rapha logo, coupled with two fully reflective large panels that are great for visibility. These are separated using a black leather contrast stripe.

The bag unzips into a clamshell style to allow it to lie fully flat,  meaning you can pack and access its contents just like a suitcase. There is also a very useful separate padded laptop pocket that fits a 13” laptop.

Additionally the bag also includes a pocket that gives you access to smaller items on the go and an internal slip pocket and a zip pocket to keep your possessions safe but easy to reach.

If like me, you love having extra storage (which of course comes in handy for extra morale snacks and spares) while out riding, you may have considered buying a top tube bag.

In this piece I’ll be taking a look at the waterproof Top Tube Bag from Craft Cadence, which I have been using while out training over the last week.

First Look

On first impressions, I really like how compact this bag is, everything is neat yet it has a great amount of space inside for tools and spares: I like to take quite a few spare inner tubes out with me just in case.

Additionally, this bag is only available in just one colour. I don’t however feel this to be an issue, as I would personally always choose a black saddle or top tube bag, this is just personal preference as I feel any other colour would quickly look tatty from my own daily usage.

Another feature I’m a fan of on first glance is the great little inner zipper pocket which would be great for housing house keys, card or cash. I feel it’d also be great for organising smaller items such as extra hair bobbles or mini bike locks.

As well as that, I’m a big fan of the fun and vibrant Craft Cadence logo on the side which includes high vis accents. I’m also excited to see how waterproof the bag is as keeping electronics dry, like a power bank, is something I look for in bike bag when out doing long days.

Craft Cadence Top Tube Bag Price

GBP: £40.99

EUR: €49,95

USD: $52.99

AUD: $75.00

Key Features

  • Magnetic and velcro flap (no outer zip)
  • Waterproof
  • 1.5 litre capacity
  • Potential for mounting phones and computers
  • Inner zip compartment for valuables
  • Easy to use while riding
  • Electronics charging cover to charge computer
  • Grippy rubber velcro straps
  • High-vis detailing

Thoughts and Feelings After Testing

First and foremost, I want to say how impressed I am regarding the capacity of this bag. I managed to fit in a lot of items, including house keys, card, an inner tube, two gels, a bar, a power bank as well as a cable and there was still room for more things!

Therefore, I think it’s safe to say that this top tube bag is an impressive little piece of kit: I’ve often found smaller luggage items for cycling to be lacking in space. But that just isn’t an issue with this bag, as you can see.

In addition to the generous capacity, I also really liked the electronics charging cover feature to allow for charging on the go. This would be a really great feature for longer rides when your bike computer, or even front light needs a charge.

Personally, I must admit that I didn’t actually end up using this feature during my testing as I didn’t need to, but without a doubt I will be utilising it fully in the future.

Moreover, I was also impressed with how easy the top velcro and magnetic flap was to open and access snacks inside: alternative options, such as bar bags, have often been too tricky to open while riding along, so this product has definitely solved that issue.

Last but not least, living up to its name, I’m glad to report that the bag was in fact, waterproof. I must admit, I was at first skeptical of the ‘waterproof’ statement.

But, my skepticism quickly turned to delight when during a downpour (classic riding in Blighty) all of my possessions inside remained dry. I could physically see the water wasn’t absorbed by the outer material. So yes. The bag is waterproof.

Craft Cadence Top Tube Bag [PROS + CONS]

PROSCONS
Good valueDoesn’t fit as neatly aesthetically with a ‘slammed’ stem like mine
Easy to attach to your bikePotential for any top tube bag to scratch the frame
Has lots of great features that have been well thought out

Conclusion

Overall, I really like this top tube bag, even though I wouldn’t have previously chosen one over a bar bag, which I had been predominantly using prior to this testing.

I have found this bag to be a lot easier to use in general while riding along in comparison to the bar bag I had on my bike before. The bar bag I had was just at an awkward angle to open while riding without risking the contents falling out: you just don’t have to worry about that happening with this top tube bag.

Therefore I would highly suggest any bar bag enthusiast, and anyone else for that matter, to give the Top Tube bar bag from Craft Cadence a go: it’s user friendly and a great addition to use alongside a saddle bag.

My glasses go with me wherever I go.

As such, they are fitted by a trained optician, each element entirely customised and tuned to me and my requirements.

It also took no fewer than 37 messages, photos and videos on the family Whatsapp chat to choose the design of my current pair.

The only other object on this planet that does go with me wherever is my rucksack.

However, historically, it has not been selected in the rigorous manner as befits its frequency of use. There is no appointment with someone trained to fit it and at best only 3 WhatsApp messages to decide on a bag. But having had a number of bags fail on the job through damage, lack of waterproofness or just lack of style, the search for a pack that could be my everyday carry through London has intensified.

Enter British brand Craft Cadence’s suggested solution to this problem: their 30L waterproof backpack aimed squarely at the cycling commuter. It comes in yellow and black and costs £89.99.

The Craft Cadence Waterproof Backpack is a durable and waterproof cycling backpack designed for all weather conditions. It features a roll-top closure, welded seams, and waterproof zippers to keep your belongings dry. The backpack also has a padded back panel and straps for comfort.

Pros

  • Completely waterproof
  • Spacious
  • Good storage options

Cons

  • Fiddly to close

Craft Cadence Waterproof Backpack

This bag has been designed by commuters in London and as a fellow London cyclist I can say that this shows.

As anyone who commutes in the UK knows, a waterproof bag is nigh on essential, assuming you enjoy your clothes and laptop being dry, and this backpack is waterproof in the extreme. Rated at IPX 5 – effectively providing waterproofness in all weather conditions – this pack kept all cargo totally dry in extensive rain testing both in London and the rainy North (Manchester). This is achieved by welded seams and proper tarpaulin material which means it’s also tough, suitable then for the rough and tumble of city bike commuting.

Big Waterproof Backpack for Commuters

Unlike many other waterproof bags, this one is big. The 30L capacity is ample for all the commuting essentials. My usual payload (laptop, clothes, shoes, lunchbox, towel, flask) all fit in comfortably without origami-esque folding and with space to spare.

Craft have added a removable internal sleeve to allow a greater degree of organisation. Initially I didn’t see the merits of this, however I’ve recently come to see the light. When going to work, the sleeve was helpful in keeping things in place. But when raw capacity needed to be maximised, like my weekly shop, then one large compartment allowed me to buy and transport way more junk food. There’s also one external, non IPX 5, pocket which was handy for keys/wallet/mask as it allows quicker access than the main compartment.

I can’t decide whether I like the fastening mechanism or not. It’s slightly fiddly but it does work, however my cold winter hands might have appreciated something a bit simpler. It does however allow the bag to be filled to (and slightly beyond) the brim.

Ventilation

As someone who sweats like a pig at the mere thought of cycling, a backpack usually only serves to further compound this issue. In order to alleviate this, the designers at Craft have cleverly added extruded back panels of foam which allows air to flow across the rider’s back. While this didn’t make it a completely sweat free experience, it certainly is better than many other backpacks in this department. With both hip and chest straps, the bag sat securely at all times in a way that didn’t impede my cycling at all.

Style wise, the yellow variant I got sent is very clearly a cycling rucksack but the black edition is discrete enough for more formal settings. That being said, we were often asked what bag it was as fellow cyclists eyed it up.

So all things considered, has the Craft Cadence Backpack ended up becoming my everyday backpack? Well, not quite… Because it’s been hijacked by my parents who have made it their day to day bag. While my search for a bag may continue, theirs won’t because this bag is waterproof, tough and comfortable, all you need from a bag like this.
