Having also reviewed Vaela’s excellent jeans and bike bag, I was excited to try their stylish and suave jacket.

The only cycling jacket I’ve ever owned is a hi vis Gore-Tex which isn’t always the most subtle, especially when I’m riding to work or an event and would like to blend in…

I have therefore opted to wear other coats and jackets when I cycle but then I worry about compromising my visibility and safety, as well as them not always being comfortable or designed for riding.

Vaela describe their primary focus as ‘the design and manufacture of women’s clothing that looks beautiful off the bike and works wonderfully on the bike’. I have been really impressed by their other products so let’s see how I got on with their jacket.

Vaela 001 Cotton Jacket
  • Fit
  • Function
  • Style
  • Value
  • Quality
4.1

Summary

A truly beautiful women’s jacket that is packed with discreet functionality for riding a bicycle. Big pockets and everything else you’d want from a cycling jacket.

Pros

  • Stunning, elegant design
  • Feels tailormade
  • Perfect fit for cycling

Cons

  • Not waterproof
  • Very expensive

First Impressions

Just like the jeans and bag, Vaela’s jacket arrived beautifully presented and folded in their sustainable packaging.

The remarkable standard of Vaela’s products is striking and the jacket is no exception. It felt sturdy but supple, and the reflective elements are cleverly incorporated to keep you looking stylish and safe.

As I am quite petite, I had some reservations about how it would fit but thanks to Vaela’s comprehensive sizing instructions and design it was perfect.

The material and design make it very comfortable but also adaptable as you can alter details like the lapel, and either tie or leave the belt loose. Similarly, the reflective elements at the end of each sleeve can be folded back and the belt can also be reversed.

I liked how the jacket looks casual yet also smart as I’ve never seen a cycling jacket that so effortlessly spans both styles. As it can be worn in different ways, and obviously also complemented by other clothes, it is very versatile.

Key Features

  • The belt can be worn multiple ways, with hidden belt loops which are invisible when the jacket is worn without
  • The belt can also be turned over to show the reflective patterns whilst riding.
  • The scoop profile cuffs can be folded down to cover the wrist whilst riding, and also to reveal their reflective patterns
  • The saddle shoulders have been very carefully designed to ensure that the arms are not restricted and the shoulders don’t ride up when cycling
  • A little stretch in the fabric further improves comfort and fit
  • The convertible collar ensures the jacket looks equally good with one button open and showing a lapel, or when fully buttoned up and with collar raised on a chilly ride home
  • It’s cut longer at the back to ensure full coverage when riding and has a flattering cut out side profile that provides extra room in the hips when pedalling
  • Two deep outside front pockets keep contents firmly in place and readily accessible
  • Buttons made from sustainably grown Corozo nut – the ‘vegetable ivory’ of the plant world

Testing

I must admit that it has been tricky to test the jacket due to cold and wet weather as although it is versatile, Vaela have been open in acknowledging that it is not waterproof or weatherproof. This is because their passion for sustainability and sourcing high quality and environmentally conscious materials has led them to further research options as opposed to compromising their values.

However, on the warmer and sunnier days I have thoroughly enjoyed using it on my rides and thanks to the stretch in the fabric I have been able to wear it over a thick jumper.

As with the generous pockets on their jeans, the two large pockets on the jacket easily accommodate my phone, keys and more which is always a constant struggle and annoyance with other clothes for women. The location of the pockets also means the contents feel secure compared to other jackets where I find myself hitting whatever is in my pocket as I ride and worrying it will fall out en route.

Another feature which has been designed with women in mind is the above referenced longer cut at the back of the jacket. I cannot emphasise how appreciated this is as it provides welcome coverage when cycling which is often lacking in other jackets, but it also manages to still be flattering.

Verdict

Vaela’s jacket is a firm favourite of mine. It looks great, fits as if it has been tailor made, and has been incredibly well designed to think about every cycling motion and need.

Ideally it would be waterproof as it seems a shame to have to hide it with my hi vis when it rains but I appreciate the environmental justification for this decision, and that Vaela are looking into other options.

It is at the upper end of the market at a cost of £210 but as with Vaela’s other products, they are perfect both on and off the bike so are a worthwhile wardrobe investment. Personally I know I will definitely be wearing this jacket even when I’m not cycling.

If you’re looking for a women’s cycling jacket that will make you feel smart, stylish and safe when you cycle then Vaela’s jacket ticks all the boxes.

Finding the right size bike to fit you can sometimes be a little tricky, especially given the hoards of advice thrown your way from people on the internet and sales assistance in stores.

Throw into the mix being a petite rider and this task can seem a little overwhelming. However, we’ve put together some solid advice in order to help you find a bike that is a suitable size for you.

Bikes are for everyone, even if standard sizes and geometries seem unfavourable, there are bikes out there for you.

But if you’re a little bit vertically challenged, we’ve help find the best bikes for short women.

Best Bike for Short Female

  1. For Riders from 4’11 to 5’9

    Sirrus X 2.0 Step-Through

A hybrid bike designed for versatility and comfort, featuring a lightweight frame and smooth-rolling tires.

Does Size Matter… When Buying a Bicycle?

Size absolutely matters when buying a bike: buying a bike that is too big means it won’t be comfortable to ride. Nor will it be easy for you to control.

Not only will a riding a bike that’s too big for you be uncomfortable, but it could also potentially lead to injuries and pains (like back pain) due to overreaching just to hold the handlebars.

Buying a bike that is too small is also problematic. Issues from riding a bike that is too small also includes injury and pains. Again won’t be comfortable, mostly through feeling cramped. Riding a bike shouldn’t injure you at the end of the day, it’s meant to be good for your health.

Which Bike is Best for a Petite Woman?

The best bike for petite women would ideally be a custom made bike. Many companies do actually provide custom build bikes where the frame is built around your sizing needs. However this does come at a cost, thus isn’t going to be an option for everyone.

However, when it comes to sizing and ease of getting on and off of the bike, the best bike for petite size women is a hybrid and commuter style bike. More specifically, a step through style hybrid bike as the dipped frame design allows for easy mounting and remounting.

This is a common issue smaller riders face when trying to find a bike that they feel comfortable riding. Couple this with a comfortable women specific saddle, and you have a winning combination comfort wise.

When I was younger, I used to refuse to wear my helmet when riding to school on the grounds that it didn’t look great. My Grandma wasn’t too pleased about this, so whenever I visited her, I would wear my helmet until I got to the end of her road and then take it off for the rest of my journey home (sorry Mum!).

In hindsight this was very silly from a safety perspective, but helmets can be a big barrier for girls and women who cycle. Helmets get an unfairly bad reputation, despite them serving an incredibly important purpose. Thankfully we’re here to share the best looking helmets out there and turn them from cringe to cool.

What to Look for in a Bike Commuter Helmet

The primary function of a helmet is to protect your head, and more specifically your brain. Unfortunately if you fall off your bike, or are sadly involved in an accident, you are very vulnerable. This can happen for many reasons. Maybe there is an unexpected pothole on your commute, or sadly you have a run in with a driver. Whatever happens, you want your helmet to keep you safe.

The best way to guarantee this is to choose a helmet that has MIPS. This stands for Multi-Directional Impact Protection System. Essentially this provides extra protection for your brain. Research has shown that an ‘angular impact’, such as that experienced if you were to fall of your bike, can cause more severe injury.

As we covered in detail in this post, “a MIPS helmet contains a leading slip-plane technology, usually between the comfort padding and the EPS (a high-quality foam which reduces energy). MIPS has been created by leading brain surgeons and scientists with the aim of reducing the rotational forces on the brain for certain impacts.

The MIPS layer is designed to rotate inside the helmet to slow down or reduce the amount of energy transferred to or from the head. This, in turn, alleviates the risk and severity of brain damage.”

In addition to MIPS, helmets can also help to protect you by having built in lights or can even assist you to signal when you’re riding via indicators. If your commute tends to be in low light or darker times of the day, especially in winter, then this could be an invaluable feature to look for to increase your visibility.

While safety is the priority, style is also important as you want to look good on your commute. Whether you’re after a more aerodynamic shape, or a design that offers ventilation, it is ultimately down to your personal preference. You’ll hopefully have your helmet for a while (although they should be replaced every 3-5 years or after a crash) so it is worth choosing a helmet that suits your style and needs.

Men vs Women Bicycle Helmets

There isn’t a significant difference between men’s and women’s helmets as the main distinction is sizing. Although they may be divided by gender on websites and in shops, they are essentially unisex depending on the size and shape of your head.

The only other factor to consider is hair. If you have thicker hair, or longer hair that is tied up in a ponytail, making sure the system at the back of the helmet is compatible with how you style your hair when cycling will mean it is a more comfortable riding experience. Thankfully we’ve put together this informative post on cycling with long hair, different styles and the best helmets for ponytails.

Bike Helmets Don’t Have to Be Ugly

Thankfully the days of me being embarrassed by my helmet are in the past as now there are so many stylish, affordable and high quality options. One of the most important considerations to make for urban cyclists and commuters is your pants – after all, this is what surrounds your cycling engine.

Urban cycling trousers can come in many shapes and sizes, depending on your needs. If you live in the a wet climate (the UK for example), then waterproof cycling trousers may be an everyday requirement, or at least an option to have in your bag. But if you’re riding to the office in fair weather, maybe you’ll just want some smart cycling trousers.

Best Cycling Trousers for Commuting for Men

Of course, while you want your trousers to be practical, when you’re looking for the best urban cycling pants, you should also love the style. There’s no need to make the compromise between the style of regular pants and the functionality of cycling trousers. These days there’s plenty of choice when it comes to finding stylish cycling pants boasting tonnes of practical design features.

With that in mind, let’s push off and start our journey to find the best cycling trousers for urban commuters.

Key Features of Smart Cycling Pants

When you’re on the lookout for cycling commuter trousers, there’s a few things to keep in mind, primarily: fit, function and style.

One thing the best cycling trousers all have in common – whether they be waterproof, jeans or chinos – is that they should always be a little more stretchy than your everyday keks. When I’m trying out new pants, I always do the “squat test” in them – if squatting is easy, so too should be cycling.

Another thing to consider with urban cycling pants is the fit – in particular: do they cover your rear? One of the most disconcerting things about seeing a cyclist in “regular” clothes is when their backside has been exposed because the pants they’re wearing don’t quite fit right. This can easily be combated by a raised-rear to the trousers, or a longer drop to your t-shirt or jacket.

Best Bike Commuter Pants

1. DUER All-Weather Denim

  • UK Flag £199
  • US Flag $199
  • EU Flag €135

Prices are approximate

Pockets:

  • Two front hand pockets
  • Two buttoned rear pockets

Materials:

  • 70% Cotton
  • 28% Coolmax® All Season Polyester
  • 2% LYCRA® Spandex
  • Membrane: 100% Polyester

Waterproof membrane to keep you dry

Reflective detailing on cuff and waistband

Discreet gusseted crotch

I first came across DUER in 2017 and even visited their HQ in Vancouver not long after.

Back then, they claimed to produce the “World’s Most Comfortable Pants” and they weren’t far wrong. Now they’re producing a greater variety of pants and jeans, including a growing collection of water-resistant trousers.

The All-Weather Denim is the best pair of water-resistant trousers I’ve ever come across and it’s pretty amazing that they’re able to achieve this with a pair of jeans.

These jeans are made from a blend of cotton, polyester and Lycra, which provides a comfortable and breathable stretch to the material, but the waterproofing comes courtesy of the polyester membrane of the eajns.

But these aren’t just practical waterproof jeans. These are beautiful jeans. Even those with the most discerning of eyes wouldn’t label them as ‘cycling jeans’ based on their appearance.

The All-Weather slim fit denim jeans from DUER are a practical take on a classic wardrobe staple. Coming in a choice of two colours your outfit doesn’t have to be compromised due to your choice of transport into work.

These jeans also benefit from being both water and windproof thanks to the specialist membrane used, you’ll be covered no matter what and kept both dry and warm while riding to work.

Fit wise the All-Weather jeans are also a comfortable and flexible fit due to having 2% LYCRA® included in the blend, ensuring optimal movement and comfort.

The only downside to these jeans is their hefty $199 price tag. However, DUER also have a cheaper “Stay Dry Denim” jean which is very similar although not quite as waterproof (but can still protect you from moderate downpours) and retails for $139.

2. Sigr Riksväg 99 Cycling Chino

  • UK Flag £90
  • US Flag $120

Pockets:

  • Two front hand pockets
  • Two buttoned rear pockets

  • 48% Cotton
  • 48% Polyester
  • 4% Spandex

Cycling fit

Reflective detailing

If there’s two things the Scandinavians know about its cycling and style.

So, when you get a Swedish brand producing urban cycling clothing, you should pay attention.

Sigr’s Riksväg 99 Chino is a perfect blend or urban style and cycling functionality. These elegant bike chinos are study with a good amount of stretch and have been cut with commuters in mind – so that pedalling is easy in the Sigr chinos.

The Riksväg chino also boasts lots of discreet reflective detailing, including on the pocket flaps on the rear, as well as on right leg if you turn the trouser leg up.

These pants both breathable and comfortable, with a nice blend of cotton, polyester and spandex ensuring a nice balance between form and function.

Sigr also produced a similarly styled cycling chino short, the Strandvägen.

3. Ministry of Supply Pace Chino

  • UK Flag £110

If you’re on the lookout for smart-looking, office-friendly cycling clothes, then Ministry of Supply is probably your best option.

The Momentum Chino is just one example of their outstanding cycling to work range. The Chino is extremely lightweight, breathable, soft, stretchy, yet durable, and has a DWR coating to repel light rain.

It comes in a very sleek, minimalist style and is available in six different colours. The chinos are also abrasion and wrinkle resitant, which means you don’t need to worry about them creasing if you ever need to throw them in a bag.

Ministry of Supply also provide customers with the option of a slim or standard fit based on your own preferences.

Although a very pricy pant, Mission Workshop’s Division Chino is built-to-last.

These are great all-round stylish cycling chinos that will be able to keep up with you – regardless of what your day entails.

Importantly, the Mission Workshop chinos are water-repellent, so they can keep you dry in all but the most severe of downpours and are made from durable four-way stretch nylon fabric – so cycling in these chinos is no problem.

Another thing I love about these urban chinos is that they include a zipped pocket on the side of the trouser to keep any of your valuables secure.

While these trousers look good, they are a little stiffer than typical chinos and so don’t quite fit into more formal or office environments. That said, these are great chinos for the outdoors and ambling about in a city: they’re warm, flexible and durable.

Durable stretch jeans

Gussetted crotch, reinforced seams and double lined pockets

Osloh have done a great job in producing cycling denim jeans that are strong, stretchy and practical.

Durability is at the forefront of what Osloh bicycle jeans are all about. Not only do they feature a sturdy gusseted crotch, but they’ve also reinforced all the areas of the jean that are likely to wear out when they’re frequently used for bike rides. That means you’ll also find a quilted reinforced chain side leg panel, a double lined phone pocket and binding at the seams.

When it comes to reinforced cycling jeans – it doesn’t get any better than this.

Osloh’s Denim Traffic Jean is also packed to the rafters with pockets. There’s four front pockets, three rear pockets and a side pocket that I really like for putting in my earbuds (a phone fits too, but peaks out of the top).

The Traffic Jeans utilised buttons throughout the pant, with a button-up fly and a double-buttoned closing at the waist. There are also snap waistband adjusters on either side if you want to bring in the waist at all and avoid wearing a belt.

I’m a big fan of DUER, having previously reviewed their No Sweat Pants and paid a visit to their Vancouver HQ in 2018.

The DUER Performance Jeans have tonnes of stretch and are pretty durable too. But, importantly, they look just like good-looking every jeans.

They’ve not been built specifically for bike commuters, but instead for active people going about their business. But that means, whether by design or not, DUER have created jeans for bike riding in style.

Indeed, as well as being great stretch jeans, DUER’s Performance Denim is also breathable thanks to the COOLMAX fibres wicking moisture from the body, while the jeans also feature reinforced seams and DUER’s signature gusset to ensure they’re durable too.

The DUER Performance Denim Jeans come in a range of colours and are also available in both a slim fit and relaxed fit design.

Duer’s No Sweat Pants aren’t built specifically for cyclists. They’re just great pants that handle every day activities really well.

I reviewed these back in 2017 and they’re still amongst my favourite trousers.

But why are they so good? Well, for starters, they look great with a slim fit design and come in lots of different colour options.

The material also has a premium look and feel and offers plenty of stretch due to its blend of Cotton, Tencel, Coolmax Polyester and Lycra Spandex.

The No Sweat Pants are also pretty sturdy with reinforced seams and a hidden gusset. Another big plus for cyclists is that they are also breathable due to the Coolmax Polyester fibres ingrained into he material.

The Endura Hummvee range has proved to be a huge hit with urban cyclists for years. The range includes padded baggy shortsreflective jacketsgloveshelmets and these great-looking cycling chinos.

One thing that’s never in doubt with Endura is how comfortable and functional gear is for cycling. And it’s no different here: although rugged, these Endura chinos are soft to the touch and offer plenty of stretch to make it easy to get your leg over the saddle and while pedalling.

But Endura have also done a great job on the style of these bike chinos. They look smart and you’d never identify them as “cycling clothes” unless you already knew them.

Although not cheap, these chinos certainly aren’t overpriced and provide real value for money when you consider the quality of the pants.

Solid chinos for commuting by bike.

Sadly, this isn’t quite what it was circa 2011, but the Levi’s 511 Flex jeans are still good jeans for commuting by bike, with added stretch built into the jeans thanks to their 99% denim, 1% elastine blend, while the fit is also great for outdoor lifestyles – including those who get about on their bicycle.

The 511 is the best Levi’s cycling jeans option now available and they come in around 10 different colours, so you’re bound to find a finish you like.

Other features also include ankle zippers, a water resistant zip pocket (keeping your phone safe and dry) and a reinforced two layer back panel to ensure that the road spray cannot seap through the material on long wet commutes into work.

We love these jeans so much that they’re our #1 recommended cycling jeans for women. A little while ago our co-founder, Pete, reviewed the men’s version and was blown away. The women’s version are equally brilliant. Not only are they fully waterproof and windproof, but they look gorgeous too.

A lot of cycling trousers are water resistant, but the Duer All-Weather have a waterproof membrane to keep you fully protected without compromising on style and comfort.

And these jeans are so comfortable that you’ll forget you’re actually wearing jeans. They have more than enough stretch for cycling (or any activity), and also feature the Duer signature hidden gusset for greater flexibility and range of motion.

Best Urban Cycling Trousers Guide

Just because you want to feel good on your ride doesn’t mean you can’t look good too.

Find stylish cycling trousers, jeans and chinos for everyday life by reading our reviews and style guides below.

If you want your cycle pants to stand the test of time, a gusseted crotch is one of the most valuable features as it can really protect against wear and tear. Don’t know what a gusset is? Fear not…

What is a Gusseted Crotch?

Shorts or trousers with a gusseted crotch are the holy grail for cyclists. But  exactly what is a gusseted crotch?

Basically, gusset pants – AKA diamond crotch pants – feature a diamond-shaped piece of material that is sewn over the crotch area of trousers. The purpose of this is to stop the four seams of the trousers coming together in a high-pressure area – increasing freedom of movement, comfort, as well as the durability of the trousers. For cyclists especially, the trouser crotch faces a lot of wear and tear, so the best cycling pants usually have a gusseted crotch too.

Urban Cycling Gusset Pants

Some examples of stylish urban cycling trousers with a gusseted crotch are the Resolute Bay Cycling Jeans, Osloh Bicycle Jeans and Levi’s Commuter range. The likes of swrve and Rapha also provide top quality gusset pants for cyclists.

Do Waterproof Breathable Cycling Trousers Exist?

Most trousers aren’t waterproof. And for good reason. When you make something waterproof, it’s near impossible to make it breathable too – and it’s important that your legs can breathe. Otherwise, while you’re keep the moisture of the outside world out, you’re creating your own moisture inside and locking it in. And no-one wants to be wet (well, only in that way, you dirty git).

Generally speaking, you only want to be wearing waterproof cycling trousers in torrential weather – it’s overkill otherwise. If you do live in a rainy climate though, there are some cycling rain pants options for you.

What are the Best Waterproof Trousers for Cycling?

I should start with a disclaimer here: you’ll find it near impossible to discover waterproof cycling trousers that are comfortable enough and good-looking enough for everyday life.

Breathable and waterproof aren’t two things that go very well together, so waterproof cycling trousers should generally kept back for those awful downpour days – the days when it is actually best to sacrifice style for out and out functionality.

Best Cycling Rain Pants

If you want impenetrable waterproof trousers for cycling – the kind of stuff that can withstand a monsoon, you’re probably best looking at waterproof overtrousers as the best bicycle rain pants. Otherwise, you’ll be hard pushed to find anything that comes close to resembling stylish cycling trousers.

Types of Bike Commuting Pants

Getting a comfortable pair of bike commuting pants can really make your commute significantly more enjoyable. For me, they’re the most important piece of kit for urban commuters.

I used to wear cheap trousers and jeans on my rides and always found that my legs would get uncomfortable pretty fast, either because the material would start chafing, my movement would be restricted, my legs would get really hot and sweaty and I’d often be doing my best builders’ bum impression.

If you cycle regularly – or even live a somewhat active lifestyle for that matter – investing in a good pair of urban cycling trousers is a very wise move.

Obviously, there’s lots of different types of cycling trousers out there though, ranging from waterproof cycling trousers, to waterproof overtrousers, water-resistant pants, urban cycling chinos, urban cycling jeans, casual cycling pants and more office-friendly smart cycling trousers. In the below sections, we’ll take a more in-depth look at each of these to find what is best suited for you.

Waterproof Cycling Overtrousers

One of the most popular forms of waterproof cycling trousers are over trousers, i.e. waterproof trousers you put over your existing trousers. This is an option I tend to go with as its near impossible to find good-looking waterproof trousers. Therefore, I wear regular cycling trousers – maybe water-resistant cycling trousers – but will carry an emergency pair of waterproof overtrousers in my bag, if I suspect the weather may turn.

My personal preference is the Regatta Pack It Over Trouser. You can find these from £7.99 on Amazon (for both men and women) and are – as the name suggests – extremely easy to pack away in a small bag which you can throw in with the rest of your carry.

READ: Best Waterproof Cycling Overtrousers Under £50

Water-Resistant Cycling Trousers

Now while it can be difficult to find good-looking waterproof cycling trousers, there are plenty of stylish water-resistant cycling trousers out there. The difference between “waterproof” and “water-resistant” simply comes down to how much water the material can handle. Water resistant gear will usually do a good job in light rain, but won’t last in the downpour.

However, absolute downpours are relatively rare, so my preference is to wear stylish cycling pants with a bit of water-resistance in them.

Cycling Commuter Pants

If you’re looking for a good pair of bike pants for your ride to work or just ambling about the city, cycling commuter pants – like most pants – come in many shapes and forms… there’s cycling chinos, cycling jeans and smart cycling trousers. The following sections will take a more in-depth look at each.

Urban Cycling Chinos

I love chinos. For me, they’re the perfect middle-point between casual and formal attire. They look good with a t-shirt or a dress shirt and they can also be great bike commuter pants.

But you don’t have to don stiff normal chinos when riding around, there’s a great selection of stylish urban cycling chinos around.

Indeed, I recently completed a thorough round-up of the best cycling chinos around for both men and women urban cyclists. I’ve reviewed quite a few stylish cycling chinos in the past few years, with the Spoke Bulletproof Chinos being one of my favourites.

READ: Best Cycling Chinos for Men and Women

Casual Cycling Trousers

While I talk about “cycling in style” on Discerning Cyclist, this doesn’t mean we are overtly fashion or style conscious. I am certainly no fashion guru. The idea is mainly about finding everyday-looking clothes that are comfortable and functional to cycle in.

So rather than ‘stylish cycling trousers’, a better way of putting it may be ‘casual cycling trousers’ – i.e. regular pants that are great to cycle in – whether they be chinos, jeans or whatever type of keks you like to go about your business in.

Smart Cycling Trousers

Many people cycle to work, with many having the same dilemma: should I cycle in sports gear and then get showered and changed at work or are there smart cycling clothes I can wear that will feel good on the bike and be suitable for a day in the office? I’ve always preferred the latter.

“But Pete, aren’t you a sweaty stinking mess all day?”

No beautiful fantasy stranger, I’m not. I don’t commute more than 30 minutes by bike and I don’t ride in a frenzied state. I take my time and enjoy the ride – and by doing so, don’t become a sweaty mess.

Whenever I’ve worked office jobs, finding smart cycling trousers has always been one of the greatest challenges. And that’s why I wrote a guide about exactly that: smart cycling trousers that are suitable for the office.

Again, I tend to opt for cycling chinos or cycling jeans as my go to smart cycling pants options as these types of trousers can transcend styles.

Urban Cycling Jeans

I used to ride around in cheap everyday jeans – and it’s okay to do so – but you’ll often feeling hot, clammy and uncomfortable, with chafing a real risk. But if you get jeans that are real bicycle trousers – you’re in for a treat.

The first time I tried a pair of urban cycling jeans (the Resolute Bay Cordura Jeans, in fact), I was hooked. The jeans looked damn good, but they were also stretchy and breathable – which once you’ve experienced on your commute, there’s no going back. Resolute Bay also include reflective striping on the rear and side of their cycling commuter jeans – which is a massive benefit when cycling at night.

READ: The Best Cycling Jeans Around for Men and Women

There are plenty of other biker jeans brands out there too, including the famous Levi’s Commuter jeans range – which have unfortunately dipped in quality in recent years. Other urban cycling jeans brands to keep an eye out for are  the outstanding Osloh Jeans, as well as Rapha and swrve cycling jeans.

You can also read a guide on the best cycling jeans in the UK – including the best women’s cycling jeans and the best men’s cycling jeans – below.

Breathable Cycling Pants

When you’re looking for trousers for commuting, ensuring that you get a good pair of breathable cycling pants is key.

If you’re ever running a bit late and end up cycling faster than you’d like too – your legs are gonna start heating up, but if you’re wearing breathable cycling pants (and ideally moisture-wicking ones) the damp damage (dampage!?) is going to be massively offset compared to if you were wearing heavy regular pants.

Reflective Cycling Trousers

In the past, reflective cycling trousers meant finding awful hardcore hi-vis cycling pants. The stuff that is clearly cycling gear.

One of the best innovations in recent years, though, came from British start-up Resolute Bay, who introduced reflective cycling jeans. And, no, the denim isn’t entirely hi-vis. They include reflective detailing on the rear and side of the trousers – i.e. where you need to be seen in low-light. It’s crazy how subtle this detailing is and people are always astonished when I point out that these are “cycling jeans” and then show them the reflective detailing and other cycling-friendly features, because they just look like a damn good pair of jeans.

Best Urban Cycling Trousers for Men

When it comes to picking out the best urban cycling trousers for men, I have a couple of favourites.

As I’ve already talked about in great detail, the best cycling jeans in the UK for me are undoubtedly the Resolute Bay NX1. A pair of bike jeans with plenty of stretch, a gusseted crotch and reflective detailing. I’m also a big fan of Osloh Bicycle Jeans which again are a superb pair of bike jeans with plenty of stretch and outstanding build quality. Osloh Jeans are also based in the New York, so are recommend for American and Canadian visitors as to avoid excessive shipping and import costs.

In terms of the best men’s cycling chinos, I’ve talked about this in great deal in the guide below, with the SPOKE Bulletproof Chinos and the swrve Chinos amongst my favourites.

READ: Best Cycling Chinos for Men

If you’re on the lookout for cheap cycling trousers though, I’d highly recommend checking out Japanese brand UNIQLO. This is one of my go to places for finding cheap, functional and stylish activewear. The gear isn’t built for cyclists especially, but you’ll find a great range of breathable t-shirts, merino jumpers and stretchy trousers – all at affordable high street prices.

The UNIQLO chinos I’m especially fond of come in a slim fit but with plenty of stretch. They’re superb comfortable and cost just £34.90. They won’t last forever, but they’re great value.

Where to Buy Cycling Commuter Trousers

When you’re looking to buy cycling commuter trousers online, the breadth of choice can be a little intimidating. However, with Discerning Cyclist, there’s no need for you to trawl the web for the best urban cycling commuter trousers – I’ve done that for you.

Plus, in the tables below, I’ve put together some of the best places to buy urban cycling trousers in the UK, US, Canada and Europe.

Cheap Urban Cycling Trousers and Jeans

The downside of truly fantastic products that combine style with top-level functionality is unsurprisingly the price tag to go with it – and for a lot of people, it’s just not viable to spend more than £100 on a pair of trousers – even if they can last for years.

But don’t worry if you’re on a budget, there’s still some really good and cheap urban cycling trousers out there. They may not have all the flashy functionality – but they do a damn good job.

If you don’t have a fortune to spend, the key features to look for in affordable trousers that are good for commuting are stretch and fit – essentially, are they comfortable to ride in?

With stylish cycling clothes in general, I usually recommend UNIQLO if you’re on a budget. There gear isn’t built specifically for cycling, but most of their range features breathable and stretchy materials in classic designs. I love this gear.

The UNIQLO Slim Fit Chinos are one of the my favourites and a staple of my wardrobe. They look great and provide plenty of stretch, making cycling in them very comfortable. There’s no gusseted crotch or reflective detailing and so on like you’d find in premium cycling trousers, but for £34.90 you really can’t complain.

I run cycling sessions for women, and the most commonly asked questions are always about saddles.

Usually the women in question are new to riding, and experiencing discomfort. Sometimes they’re more experienced cyclists who are keen to switch from the standard issue saddle that came with their bike. Or maybe they’re commuters who want to avoid having to wear padded clothing on their way to work.

Whatever the reason, the reality is that saddles can hurt and saddle sore can be a particular barrier to women cycling.

However, in the past few years the cycling sector has become increasingly aware of this issue, thanks to high profile athletes like Hannah Dines speaking about having to undergo reconstructive vulva surgery, and well known cycling journalist Orla Chennauoi writing this taboo breaking ‘The V word – why we need to talk about saddle discomfort‘ article for Rouleur.

More women feel able to openly talk about their saddle experiences, and it has become normalised to raise and discuss from commuter cycling to elite level.

As a result, manufacturers who have previously focused on prioritising saddle design and ergonomics for the male body are now making sure they’re also catering for the female anatomy. This is a welcome change in the industry, but every body and bike is different, so it is important to know what saddle would work for you.

What to Look for in a Women’s Bicycle Seat

We’ve established that women’s bicycle seats differ to their counterparts for men but we need to understand why and how, so you know what to look for in your saddle.

The main difference is linked to our sit bones. As the name suggests, these are the bones that take your weight when sitting as they are located at the bottom of your pelvis. Women typically tend to have wider sit bones as our hips are wider for childbirth. Our saddles should therefore reflect this, by being wider at the back.

Don’t use your clothes size as a guide for size. Your local bike shop may have a special measuring tool, but if not, you can also do it at home by watching this quick video from renowned saddle manufacturer Selle.

Once you’ve established these measurements, check out your chosen saddle’s sizing guide to pick the right one for you as they can vary.

The next thing to consider is how you usually sit on your bike when cycling. Adopting a more ‘aggressive’ riding position of being lower means you may experience more soft tissue discomfort as your body is bent forwards. In this case you should look for a flat saddle with a short ‘nose’ design and large pressure relief area.

Source: Unsplash.com

If you ride in a more upright position then you’ll benefit from having a more curved and longer bike seat with padding at the rear as your body weight will be more centred towards the back of the saddle. Gel padded saddles are often seen as a solution for this riding style and they can work for short and infrequent use, but over time they can distort and lose their shape.

Although a saddle with firmer padding made from material like leather may need to be broken in, this will pay off – especially if you ride regularly.

We’ve already referenced soft tissue and in addition to saddle shape, there are other features that can help to reduce discomfort. Women have much greater variety and also sensitivity when it comes to our soft tissue.

Like belly buttons, many women find they fall into what is known as an ‘innie’ or an ‘outie’ category. Female specific saddles can therefore have a design element called ‘cut outs’ to address this, especially for those who consider themselves to be ‘outies’. Basically cut outs are are gaps and/or grooves in the saddle design to relieve pressure on your soft tissue.

If possible, it’s always useful to try before you buy so you get an idea of what saddles will be best for you. For example, there are excellent initiatives out there like the amazing women led London Bike Kitchen’s Saddle Library where you can borrow and test out a range of options.

To help you decide, we have researched and drawn on our lived experience to put together the below helpful list of the top 6 best bike seats for women.

Best Bike Seats for Women [Top 6]

  1. Specialized Power Comp with Mimic [REVIEW]
  2. Selle Italia Diva Gel Flow Bike Saddle [REVIEW]
  3. Brooks B17 Short [REVIEW]
  4. Brand X Women’s Comfort Cut Out Saddle [REVIEW]
  5. Selle Italia SLR Lady Flow Saddle [REVIEW]
  6. Brooks B67 [REVIEW]

1. Specialized Power Comp with Mimic

Price (approximate):

  • 🇬🇧 £95
  • 🇺🇸 $112
  • 🇪🇺 €108

✅ High tech

✅ Available in 3 sizes

✅ Multi-layered materials

This is a popular women’s saddle with rave reviews. We are big fans as not only is it number one in this list, but it was also named as our best bike saddle for female commuters in our compilation of the most comfortable bike seats for women.

Specialized are taking the issues that women face when it comes to saddles seriously, so much so that they have created patented MIMIC technology to produce a saddle that “perfectly adapts to your body to give you the support you need”.

This has been achieved by using multi-layered materials to provide padding but also reduce any potential swelling.

On top of this, their outstanding Body Geometry design boosts blood flow to that all important soft tissue.

Available in three different sizes and at a fairly reasonable price, this is our top choice.

2. Selle Italia Diva Gel Flow Bike Saddle

Price (approximate):

  • 🇬🇧 £114
  • 🇺🇸 $135
  • 🇪🇺 €131

✅ ‘Superflow’ cut out

✅ Dense foam padding

✅ Leather cover

Selle are very well established in the world of saddles. Handmade in Italy, they have designed this saddle specifically to make cycling comfortable for women and the female anatomy.

Available in two different widths of 135mm and 152mm, it incorporates a light gel and a large central cut out to relieve pressure in sensitive areas, particularly around the perineum.

The saddle shape is streamlined and sporty to cater for commuting, and also longer leisure rides.

3. Brooks B17 Short

Price (approximate):

  • 🇬🇧 £135
  • 🇺🇸 $159
  • 🇪🇺 €154

✅ Shorter nose

✅ Made from durable leather

✅ 10 year guarantee

Brooks are well known and respected for making high quality and long lasting saddles that are handmade in England. Their best selling B17 model is designed for women, and this specific model has a shorter nose.

Optimised for commuting and a 60 degree angled riding position, this saddle will mould and shape to you over time making it comfortable and also durable thanks to the use of 100% vegetable tanned leather.

Available in three different colours of black, brown and honey, you can also choose between softened and carved versions of this model.

Inevitably this level of bespoke quality comes at a cost so Brooks saddles are an investment but they are worth it, and their long life span means you can also find good quality second hand options.

4. Brand X Women’s Comfort Cut Out Saddle

Price (approximate):

  • 🇬🇧 £15
  • 🇺🇸 $17
  • 🇪🇺 €17

✅ Durable waterproof cover

✅ Strong and reliable rails

✅ Comfortable shape

Coming in at the lowest priced saddle in this list, Brand X Women’s Comfort Cut Out Saddle aims to provide support at a much more accessible price point.

Although it is only available in one size, the lightweight but high density padding means it’ll be a comfortable seat to ride on.

The long central cut out will also relieve soft tissue pressure while cycling.

Its versatile design means it is perfect for all kinds of cycling and as it won’t break the bank, it is also a good option to test out before potentially upgrading to a higher end alternative if needs be.

5. Selle Italia SLR Lady Flow Saddle

Price (approximate):

  • 🇬🇧 £117
  • 🇺🇸 $139
  • 🇪🇺 €134

✅ Two size options

✅ Durable cover

✅ Large cut out and padding

Another Selle saddle has made the list. Again, it has also been specifically designed for women.

It may only be a saddle but it is full of clever technology including a carbon fibre shell, a highly resistant and durable cover material and their new SuperFlow cutout. This means it is light weight but strong.

Comfort is also a priority as the cut out allows women of different sizes to find a riding position that works for them. It also prevents prolonged pressure on your pelvis so it is perfect for all kinds of cycling, including your commute.

6. Brooks B67

Price (approximate):

  • 🇬🇧 £145
  • 🇺🇸 $171
  • 🇪🇺 €165

✅ Durable leather

✅ Shapes over time

✅ 10 year guarantee

Our second Brooks saddle and the final suggestion in our list, the B67, is a leather saddle for city or touring.

Suggested as the saddle for city bikes, Dutch style bikes, cargo bikes and touring bicycles, it is ideal for women who ride in an upright position.

It is similar in shape to the other Brooks saddle we’ve featured but this model comes with chromed suspension springs for ultimate comfort.

It is also available in three colours – black, brown and honey, as well as a short and softened version too.

  7. Budget Comfort Tights

Van Rysel Women’s Bibless Bike Touring Tights

Why Wear Cycling Tights?

Wearing tights while cycling is important for two main reason.

The first reason is of course, warmth. Keeping your working muscles warm when the temperatures aren’t so warm is important to prevent injury and keep you comfortable. Usually, anything under around 17°C would be considered the right time to cover your legs and arms, the latter especially covered with a base layer underneath outerwear.

Additionally, another reason bar warmth, to wear tights is the additional feature of padding (aka chamois). The padding in cycling tights really helps to improve overall comfort while sat in the saddle on a bike. Your undercarriage is of course super delicate and therefore will be very thankful for the adde support that a chamois provides.

Another great reason to wear tights while riding is to keep to your beliefs. For example, some religions believe in being covered, therefore tights help to allow your to participate and have fun on a bike no matter what your customs and beliefs.

Are Cycling Tights and Leggings the Same?

Cycling tights and leggings differ for one main reason: cycling tights have a chamois fitted where your undercarriage sits for comfort and support while in the saddle. Whereas leggings don’t have this padding. They are more like what you would wear to the gym or during yoga.

Both of which are completely fine to ride a bike in, as at the end of the day what you decide to wear is personal preference. However, a padded tight will most often be the better option due to the benefits of featuring a chamois.

However, some people may rather wear more of a trouser. For example, if you are commuting or ride mountain bike, often a trouser like piece of clothing is favoured over a tight or leggings which are closer fitting. But all in all, it’s of course personal preference.

What to Look for in a Rain Jacket for Cycling

The primary purpose you’re looking for in a rain jacket is for it to keep you dry. However, it is likely you may wear this jacket when it isn’t raining so it is helpful to consider other factors.

Firstly, is it comfortable and breathable? Trespass defines breathability as “the ability of a fabric to absorb moisture and release it through the material itself, allowing it to breathe“. Basically a breathable material will stop you from overheating, and will also allow air flow.

This is particularly important for cycling as you may sweat so you want a rain jacket that will keep you, and your armpits, as dry as possible!

Secondly, how easily does it pack away? Perhaps you just got caught in a short shower, or the forecast predicted rain but it stayed dry. You may want to take your rain jacket off mid ride, or when you arrive at your destination. In this situation it is useful if your jacket is lightweight, compact and foldable so you can strap it to your pannier rack, or pop it in your bag.

Finally, is it reflective? Your rain jacket will be your outer layer. Depending on when and where you cycle, it can be handy for it to also serve as a means of keeping you as visible as possible to others. Don’t worry as this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to be bright yellow!

There are plenty of subtle and stylish options in a wide range of colours, many of which are either waterproof or water resistant. If visibility is essential, check out our list of the best reflective cycling jackets on the market.

Waterproof vs Water Resistant Jackets

We’ve established that the main feature we’re looking for in a rain jacket is to keep you dry and we’ve mentioned that jackets can be waterproof or water resistant, but what does this mean?

It is an important distinction to understand as it is the difference between staying dry in a heavy downpour, or running the risk of getting a bit wet. The Mountain Warehouse has put together this useful guide to explain the two terms in more detail.

Essentially, water resistant jackets have a waterproofing repellent coating which will repel beads of water so they roll off but they do not have taped seams. Waterproof jackets also have a waterproof coating on the outer fabric but also have fully taped seams and may also have a built in membrane lining.

There are also various waterproof ratings which indicate how much rain an item of clothing can withstand. It is worth thinking about what you would be using your rain jacket for so you can decide if you need it to be able to only be showerproof, or if you need it to hold up for a long period of time riding in persistent heavy rain.

We’ve made sure to let you know if the jackets are waterproof or water resistant in our below list.

Rapha are well known for producing high quality stylish cycle clothing and this women’s commuter jacket is no exception.

Described as “the definitive jacket for riding to work in wet conditions”, they’ve opted for a durable but lightweight fabric with a hydrophobic membrane.

The seams are also all sealed and the inside of the fabric has a dry touch print so it is breathable. In addition to this the hem is elasticated, and the cuffs have internal storm binding to keep water out.

On the outside, there is a full length waterproof zip which they’ve strategically placed off centre to avoid it rubbing on your chin when zipped up.

A handy hood is also included which can be worn underneath a helmet. This is particularly useful for very heavy rain as it also has an integrated drawcord. The hood can also be easily packed away using a reflective strap.

With regards to visibility, the jacket has a reflective gradient dot print on the tail which is another thoughtful placement so you can wear a backpack and still be seen, especially by drivers as it is in their eyeline.

Available in five colours ranging from grey blue to peach and in sizes XXS to XL, it caters to a wide range of women.

Decathlon can always be relied on for affordable good quality cycle clothing.

Their BTWIN 500 Women’s Waterproof Urban Cycling Jacket may be the cheapest option on this list but it is by no means compromising on features, in fact quite the opposite!

Starting with waterproofing, Decathlon provides extensive details about the material used and how it is tested. For example, this jacket is able to withstand the average downpour of 60 litres of water per square metre for up to 2 hours thanks to 100% watertight seams and hood!

Next up is visibility. They have positioned the reflective parts based on the “constraints of cycling” which include leaning forwards, wearing a backpack and signalling so 360 degree visibility from up to 50m away is guaranteed at night time.

They’ve also designed the jacket with a cycling specific cut and adjustment options so you can freely move but still be covered from the rain and wind.

Despite being well protected, it is also breathable thanks to a hydrophilic coating and zipped vents under the arms to allow air circulation.

As well as being water and windproof, it’s also practical with two side zipped pockets, and a hood that moves with your head which can be worn over or under your helmet

The entire design process has been well thought through as they’ve reduced the environmental impact of the product through the dyeing process.

However, in case anything does happen to go wrong when using it you’ve got a generous 2 year warranty.

I have been trying to find suitable trousers for cycling for a while. As a utility cyclist, I’ve struggled to get the right balance between practicality and style, especially when riding to work or to meet friends.

So when I had the opportunity to try out Vaela’s cycling jeans, I was very keen to give them a go. Not just because it may mean my trouser search would be over, but also because I can very much relate to their story of “being serially disappointed by the cycle clothes available to women” and “the general difficulties faced by women who wish to ride more easily and more often”.

I appreciate their mission to address this, and also the way they go about their business. With a B corporation certification pending, they are serious and vocal about embedding innovation, inclusivity and sustainability at the core of everything they do.

Summary

Vaela Cycling Jeans are designed for urban cyclists, featuring a stretchy denim fabric with reinforced seams, reflective accents, and a hidden U-lock holder.

Pros

  • Very comfortable
  • Good fit for cycling
  • Reflective detailing
  • Higher waist cut

Cons

  • Expensive!

Women’s Cycling Jeans

Vaela’s commitment to the environment is clear from the moment the jeans arrived in UK sourced, sustainable packaging that is recyclable and free from animal products.

Once opened, the jeans were beautifully presented and came with some useful cards with information about the company and their vision, as well as a short bio of cycling heroine Lady Harberton

I run my own cycling organisation to support more girls, women and non-binary people to cycle so their decision to raise awareness of women’s advocacy meant I was already sold, and that was before I found out they “actively support organisations promoting change and donate 2% of our revenue to organisations chosen by our customers whose visions are in line with our own”.

With regards to the jeans, the material feels very high quality and soft. I like their neutral indigo colour and strategic logo placement.

I was immediately drawn to the many decent sized pockets (a rarity on any women’s clothing!). In particular, I enjoyed the clever use of the lining of the front pockets to display product care information, a message to say thank you and encourage feedback, as well as the kind and handy offer to help with any repairs.

On top of the size and quantity, these are the only jean pockets that I can actually fit my standard sized smartphone in, plus when it is inside it is barely noticeable and feels very secure. This makes a big difference as it means not having to always carry an additional bag for my phone when I cycle.

Key Features

  • A single panel running the complete inside length of both legs means no seams to cause discomfort when riding
  • Soft denim with a small degree of stretch to ensure comfort
  • Waist cut higher at the back and on a curve to improve comfort and fit, and to avoid bum-cleavage
  • Hidden reflective elements printed inside the right leg
  • Additional rear pocket for phone aids access and security
  • Reinforced belt loops to resist tearing
  • Rivet free construction
  • Zip fly
  • Subtly branded with a small embroidered logo on the rear pocket

Testing

As soon as I put the jeans on, I noticed how comfortable they were. The amount of stretch was perfect for a secure fit but also flexible enough to ride in. I was also relieved that I didn’t have to worry about them falling down at the back when I was cycling.

I have been wearing them on my rides to and from work, and during my shifts, for the past few weeks to give them a thorough test. They were versatile, durable and also fitted in with my smart casual dress code due to their colour and style.

The above key features came in handy, in particular the lack of seams and also the reinforced belt loops which I used to attach my helmet to when walking into work.

They also felt warmer than my usual jeans and cycling trousers which is a big bonus as it means not having to wear bulky over trousers in colder weather.

The reflective lining is a subtle but invaluable feature that will help on those winter commutes. I was pleasantly surprised to see how far it went up the right trouser leg because as a slightly smaller than average woman, I did have to turn them up a few times.

Vaela Jeans – Verdict

In a world of fast fashion, and where cycling is still male dominated, Vaela’s cycling jeans and their company values are a welcome shift to a new direction for cycling clothing.

It is evident that Vaela’s extensive testing of other products, consultation in the design process, and their passion for their mission has paid off.

Although it does come at a cost. At £160, these jeans will be out of many women’s budgets. This is particularly the case for women who may be new to cycling and would benefit the most, but who may be reluctant or unable to spend this much when there are cheaper, albeit lower quality, alternatives.

⚡EXCLUSIVE DISCOUNT⚡
To help reduce the financial burden for Discerning Cyclists, Vaela will give you 10% off when you use code “DISCERNING” at the checkout.

For those who can afford it, these jeans are a solid investment in a better cycling experience. In addition to these jeans, Vaela also have a stylish bag and jacket for sale so if you’re keen to be fully kitted out in gear that has been tailored for women then be sure to check them out

I’m looking forward to seeing what products Vaela release in the future and the wider impact they have on the cycling sector as they continue to grow.

The Short Answer

Cycling is highly beneficial, improving physical and mental health, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and depression. It strengthens muscles, aids weight loss, enhances fertility, and can help with period cramps. It promotes confidence, independence, and overall well-being.

Cycling is a great activity for women, it is an enjoyable form of exercise which will improve their fitness and can help combat stress and depression. Despite there being a lot of myths out there about the effects cycling can have on a woman’s body, this article aims to clarify the facts and the amazing benefits of cycling.

Is It Healthy for a Girl to Ride a Bike?

Cycling is healthy for girls, as exercise improves overall fitness and releases endorphins which can boost one’s mental health. A study by the American Urological Association dispels rumours that cycling can affect female sexual or urinary function. However, cycling may increase the risk of UTIs and perineal numbness- due to pressure on the perineum.

There are many myths regarding the negative impacts of cycling, for more information check out our blog post which clarifies the real facts here!

Despite there being a minor risk of UTIs and perineal numbness, cycling is overall very beneficial for girls as it can improve both their physical and mental health.

What Does Cycling Do to a Woman’s Body?

Cycling is beneficial for a woman’s body; it decreases the risk of one having cardiovascular disease, cancer and depression.

It frequently strengthens leg muscles and can lead to weight loss, plus studies have also found that cycling/exercise can increase a woman’s fertility. The exposure to vitamin D also vitalizes your bones and immune system.

The University of Glasgow’s study on cycling states that those who cycle often are at lower risk of CVD, cancer and all causes of mortality.

The hormones released when we exercise (such as dopamine and endorphins) also boost our mood, meaning those who cycle are less likely to be depressed. For more information on the great effects of cycling see our other blog post on the benefits of cycling to work.

Women can also experience weight loss as a result of cycling, since intensive exercise burns calories. If a woman burns more calories when cycling than what she is consuming then she will lose weight.

Muscle mass built up from cycling can also contribute to weight loss, as more fuel is required to maintain the body, meaning more calories are burnt. Check out our article on cycling and fat loss to find out more.

A systematic inquiry into the effect of exercise on ovulation also revealed how exercise can be beneficial for a woman’s fertility, for it reduces the risk of anovulatory infertility and can lead to resumption of ovulation for those with PCOS. Therefore, cycling has the potential to help women ovulate.

Does Cycling Affect Your Period?

A study concerning the effect of aerobic exercise on primary dysmenorrhea reveals that anaerobic exercise can treat severe menstrual cramps. Therefore it can be beneficial for women to cycle while on their period as it can lessen cramping pains. Additionally, cycling does not cause infertility unless done excessively- like all forms of exercise.

Does Cycling Affect the Uterus?

Cycling can impact the uterus as exercise can help combat period cramping, but besides this, cycling will not affect a woman’s uterus.

Cycling Benefits for Women

Overall cycling is very beneficial for women- it improves confidence and independence, as well as one’s physical health, and mental health. Cycling can also be found to make you smarter; for the exercise pumps oxygen to your brain, enabling it to increase in size and perform better.

There is also a link between cycling and having a better memory. To discover more about how cycling increases intelligence, see our article on this topic here.

In regards to cycling improving one’s mental health, it is found that cycling releases endorphins which reduce stress and calm us when we are in an anxious state. This means cycling is brilliant for easing every-day stresses and acquiring a tranquil mind!

As previously discussed in this article- cycling can lower the risk of CVD, cancer and other health problems, so it is a great idea for women to get out on their bikes; for it will improve their overall fitness and health.

If you are a lover of the outdoors or trendy workwear attire then I’m sure you’ll have come across the iconic Norwegian brand, Helly Hansen.

The popular Scandinavian brand is well known for their high quality outdoor clothing. Yet, although they are focused on quality and practicality, they still manage to make their clothing stylish. Because who doesn’t want to enjoy the great outdoors but still look sophisticated?

Therefore, we just had to test out their Women’s Ride Cycling Jacket to see if it’d live up to their reputation…

First Look

Upon first inspection, I liked how lightweight the jacket felt. I didn’t feel heavy or bulky. I find when I’m riding I want my outer layer to be nice and light, almost like a second skin. This way I can either layer underneath with a jumper or just pop it on over a t-shirt in warmer climates.

Similarly, I noticed that there’s taped seams inside of the jacket, which of course was a big plus. I was really happy to see that this waterproof garment actually had some signs of waterproofing technology before even putting it through it’s paces.

However, I was concerned about the colour. Although it looks fantastic and really trendy since everyone is loving cool neutral tones, I myself was worried I’d trash the colour with stains after the first 10 minutes of wearing it.

Summary

The Helly Hansen Women’s Ride Cycling Jacket is a high-performance jacket designed for cycling in variable weather. It features waterproof and breathable fabric, adjustable cuffs and hem, and reflective accents for visibility. The jacket also has a slim fit and articulated sleeves for comfort while riding.

Pros

  • Well designed
  • Breathable
  • Waterproof and windproof
  • Very well made and high quality

Cons

  • White isn’t a great colour for cycling kit

Key Features

  • HELLY TECH® Protection
  • PFC-free
  • 100% Nylon Mechanical Stretch Main Fabric For Comfort
  • YKK® Vislon Front Zipper with Back Placket
  • Hanging Hood with Elastic Edge band
  • Hand Pockets with YKK® Zip Closure
  • Drawcord Adjustment At Hip
  • Elastic Edge band At Cuffs
  • Back Yoke with Ventilation
  • Printed HH® Logo At Sleeve
  • Lightweight at only 400g

Colour Options

This jacket is available in two colour options, these are: 823 NIMBUS CLOU and 990 BLACK

The first option is nice and neutral, very Scandinavian chic, if potentially a little impractical for those who are a bit messy (I’d include myself in that group) and the latter a stealthy black option.

For this review, I tried out the 823 Nimbus Clou option.

Thoughts Post Outing

As soon as I put the jacket on I noticed how soft the material feels, it didn’t feel heavy or claustrophobic as some waterproof / windproof coats make you feel. I also liked how the meshing offered a layer between the fabric and my skin, it felt breathable.

While riding, I noticed that the length in the arms of the jacket was spot on. As someone with long limbs I was a little worried the arms would move up as they often do in more relaxed style outer layers: but this was not an issue at all I’m pleased to say.

Also regarding the fit, I felt that the length was spot on. I wore a M and I’m 174cm tall, yet I noticed that the length at the back was very generous, thus prevented any dirt being thrown up by my back wheel onto my clothes underneath.

Additionally, I really liked the added features of the hood, ventilation and drawcord adjustment at the bottom. I felt that all of these features were useful and not just a gimmick. Similarly, I’m happy to report that although it’s a women’s specific piece, the pockets were actually a roomy size. Finally, real pockets for women!

Is it Really Waterproof?

If like many people wanting to enjoy the simple pleasure of bike riding come rain or shine, you will often look for a jacket that can do it all. Especially one that is waterproof and actually keeps you dry in a downpour!

Therefore, I’m thrilled to report that this jacket was actually surprisingly waterproof! Within the shower I was caught in my back and arms stayed completely dry: something that can be hard to find in jackets that are both stylish and practical.

In addition to the shower I was caught in, as you can see, the material happily beaded water that came into contact with the jacket. More so, as you can see the water didn’t even absorb when poured onto the arm. Seriously impressive stuff.

However, it’s important to note, as with any waterproof garments, that they should be washed correctly. Moreover, if you wear a backpack while riding, be mindful that the friction between your bag and the outer layer may effect the waterproofing ability of said garment.

Conclusion

Overall I really enjoyed wearing this jacket both for it’s functionality and style.

Although at first I wasn’t too sure about the colour, given white is pretty hard to remove marks that occur when riding, I have to say by the end of the day I had been totally converted to the light neutral tone – although the jacket is also available in black.

Therefore I would definitely recommend this jacket to anyone who wants a great all round waterproof and windproof cycling jacket commuting or leisure riding. The Helly Hansen Ride Jacket is versatile (can be worn off the bike too) and well thought out. So really, you can’t go far wrong.
